Personally I think it would take a big offer from a biggish club for it to happen. The only reason he isn't with the USA squad is because he is coming back from injury. He is under contract and playing in front of a full stadium for a club going places.
If he has settled here why would he want to leave?
Agreed, If you have a 20+ goal a season striker, and he gets injured or loses form at this stage of the season, you're really struggling.
Also, if you only have 1 goal threat in the team it's far easier to deal with that threat, man mark or put 2 players on him, etc.
For me, our biggest strength this season has been our goal threat from all areas.
Torp from midfield, Thomas at set pieces, etc etc.
Norwich are a good example, they have an outstanding striker (sargent) but if he doesn't score or have a good game, they struggle. (Apart from when we visit of course)
