His mistakes made me feel sick at times but I genuinely hope he proves a lot of us wrong and turns into a good goalkeeper with a fresh keeper coach.

There really wasn't any belief in him here after the umpteenth mistake, which is fair, but I hope the fresh start does him good.

Good luck Lee.

They really are a bit special. Person after person has been telling them he wasn't offered a new contract and that he can be OK on his day but struggles for confidence and has areas of his game that need big improvement. From that they've somehow decided we wanted to keep him but can't afford it.

Anyway good luck to him. Hope the change works for him and he can sort out his confidence issues, apart from when we play them obviously.

I think the funniest part of this transfer is their official twitter account trying to big it up hahahahahhahsha

Deluded fans we are. All the best Burge. Hopefully your career will be successful but we will get promoted instead of your new club. Clearly no one knows a player other than you lot. Good move one would suggest
But you do? Why the arrogance to think you're right and everyone else is wrong? I wish him well as I would Bob from accounts leaving. But just as I don't see Bob becoming the next tech millionaire, I don't see Burge improving much.

Watch the irony unfold now, he'll have a blinder of a season, go on to earn an England cap.

It's one his nan bought him from the charity shop mind

Just 6 games I can instantly think of off the top of my head where he gifted goals to the opposition last season, with absolute howlers. One decent game in 10 doesn’t come anywhere near to covering over those cracks. The ‘good shot stopper’ and ‘saved us in the play-off’ lines are also beyond tiresome, always brought up as a weak argument to defend the bloke. If he’d have been better during the league campaign we’d have gone up automatically in League 2, and without his errors this year we’d have arguably made the play-offs.

‘Loyal servant’ is another good one. Loyal because nobody else has ever considered paying a penny for him because he’s garbage. So glad Robins cleared them both out and has prioritised such a key position during the close season.

Shame I can’t like this more than once.

Has never inspired any confidence in me or by that matter any of our back fours over the last 3 seasons. Not giving him a new contract is possibly the best bit of business we have done this year.

No fan of Burge, and even thought RCC was better initially, but I don't feel comfortable with some of the vitriol against him here. It was best for us & probably him too that he moves on. Goalkeepers get better as they mature and a fresh start in a new environment could see him yet have a decent career, who knows? He made plenty of howlers for us, but also made a vital save in our EFL Trophy win & played his part in our League 2 promotion year, so I wish him well (apart from when he plays us of course).

Stay classy City fans. Player who came through the academy and some of the stuff said about him on here. Jesus.

Out of interest, are you as supportive of every academy product? Are you currently singing Hickmans praises? Just because someone comes through our academy it shouldn’t make them immune to criticism. That principle is ridiculous. Especially when said person has suggested in his initial interview that Sunderland are a bigger club with much better facilities than his beloved boyhood club. It may be true, but there’s no necessity to say it if you loved your ex club who appear to be a ‘sleeping giant’. For what it’s worth, I think some of the stuff said about him is OTT but also think it’s a ridiculous move for Sunderland IF he is there to be their #1 as he’s nowhere near consistently good enough. I hope he goes on to have a good career, and on a personal level he’s happy up there

Well this has cheered me up a touch. Hope he goes on and does well but let’s have it right, the form he showed for us will cost them a good 10 points next season if he is number 1. Maybe more under the the increased intense pressure from their lot. Actually nothing against the player but do not like them one bit and so I hope he keeps his playing standards about the same.

Good luck to him. I hope he does ok.
Only thing I’ll point out is how calm both us fans and the defence were when stockdale was playing last season.

I thought Burge was generally decent but he seemed to become a lot more error prone in the second half of last season
I just bumped into a Sunderland mate who asked what Burge was like
I said he was generally ok but prone to errors.
My mate put his head in his hands and said 'not another one'

Do you think LOB or Addai should have been playing in his place and we'd have done better with them between the sticks?

I think that was also a contributing factor, there was no competition pushing Burge for the majority of his time here. Doesn’t move away from the fact he was just crap anyway.

Not at all, LOB probably on par and Addai from what I’ve seen is inferior and certainly not experienced enough. Read the last part of my post where I state that it was best to get rid of the pair of them. It was a fundamental error by MR and the recruitment team not to highlight this critical position after relegation from League 1. We have higher aspirations now, should aim for a better standard of keeper and not try and sugarcoat him because he’s come through the Academy and we’ve been stuck with him for years. If he were any good whatsoever, he’d have been subject to bids long ago.

I agree about us not getting a better keeper in (though MR signed LOB as Burge's replacement and we've extended Addai's contract when we could've had a completely fresh break). Personally I felt LOB was inferior to Burge because he never came off his line to close down angles making it easier for strikers to score.

Of the contracted keepers available to us at the time Burge was the best option of the three and the other two would have cost us just as many or more points.

Terrible news that after all the criticism Lee has received on here and other place's, Lee last night attempted suicide, fortunately the bus he threw himself in front of managed to pass safely underneath him.

The worrying thing for Sunderland is they appear to be doing what we used to do.

There's no doubt in my mind his agent offered him to Sunderland, they saw it as a cheap wage for a player with league 1 experience and snapped it up.

Reality is....hes not good enough and they've basically wasted a wage
