Leon Best (3 Viewers)

I think he would cut it at this level - his record reminds me a lot of Leon Clarke.. along with his style of play and his overall demeanour!

I can't see a Championship club taking a punt on him so he's going to have to take a massive pay-cut unless he were to go and play in China or the middle-east.

I do think he's the type of player that we are crying out for, but I don't think his character or work ethic would sit well with Mowbray if he were to be made one of our highest earners, I think TM is more shrewd than to spend that kind of money of what would effectively be a gamble.

Perhaps that is the reasoning of the half-brained idiots on here, but the fact is lots and lots of average players from the league above score for fun in league One. The gap between the two divisions is huge.

....but the fact is lots and lots of 'better than average' players from the league above (or equivalent) don't score for fun in League One. Listing a load of proven League One scorers like the one below is pointless.

David Mooney, Paddy Madden, Matt Done, Ryan Lowe, Leon Clarke and Izale McLeod can have a word with them.

It's like name dropping some decent championship strikers for a reason a PL striker will score for fun in that league because the gulf is so big.

I doubt he will join us anyway, so it does seem a pointless debate. We're only being linked with or even talking about him because he's an ex player.

I can't see him dropping down to L1 but if he does, and was affordable, I'd be happy to have him here.

So would I Dave. Just saying I wouldn't put my mortgage on him being a 20 goals a season striker, just because this is league one.

Ruled out. 2 weeks and 2 days until the Wigan game and as it stands we're still starting with Tudgay and Thomas upfront. It's getting to the point where even if we sign a striker they probably won't be settled or match fit in time for the start of the season.

Not on Mowbray's radar apparently -

"Coventry City not interested in former Newcastle United striker Leon Best

Coventry City won't be re-signing former striker and free agent Leon Best.

The 28-year-old is looking for a new club after leaving Blackburn Rovers by mutual consent last month but the Telegraph understands that the Sky Blues are not looking at bringing him back to the Ricoh Arena.

Best made 92 leagues appearances for the Sky Blues, scoring 19 league goals before he was sold to Newcastle United on deadline day of January 2010 after a fee of around £1.2million was agreed."

Well obviously not every forward that plays in League One having previously played in the Championship or equivalent is going to score for fun.

In the last three seasons there has been a large amount of forwards who have underperformed in the Championship or have had less than average careers elsewhere, that have scored regularly in this division - or if not regularly, at a higher rate than previously in their careers. More so than players of the same ilk that have come to this division and failed.

Some of them may have even played in League One four, five or six years previously and had a poor record, but the standard of the league has declined so much in the last three years that even those players have come back and done well.

Ultimately it's a case of the League being of such a poor standard that it doesn't take that special a forward to score a decent amount of goals. Obviously there will be anomalies, the likes of Nouble, Tudgay and Jackson are ones that stand out for us.

Michael Higdon flopped for Sheffield United last year but didn't play that many games, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake did nothing for Preston last year but again wasn't afforded many starts. Leroy Lita didn't cut it at Barnsley or County but according to their fans his pace - which his game relied on - had all but gone.

Here's an even longer list of players that have scored ten plus goals in a season over the past three seasons:

David Mooney
Paddy Madden
Matt Done
Ryan Lowe
Leon Clarke
Izale McLeod
Jon Stead
Joe Garner
Eoin Doyle
Ian Henderson
Aaron Wilbraham
Cody McDonald
Jonathan Forte
Billy Clarke
Nathan Tyson
Garry Thompson
Chris Dagnall
Freddie Sears
Carl Baker
JET
Sam Baldock
Kevin Lisbie
Craig Westcarr
Nicky Ajose
Franck Moussa
Danny Kedwell
Francois Zoko
James Henry
James Collins
James Hayter
Billy Paynter
Mathias Pogba
Jake Cassidy
Karl Hawley
Lucas Akins
Andy Robinson
Akpo Sodje
