There was always going to be a number of cases like this. Those who wanted to play on, when asked, said things like "Just extend players contracts for another month."

Not that easy, a contract requires 2 willing parties

Good player him, we were linked with him when Pressley was in charge. He'd be a good signing, something of the Leon Clark about him though I doubt it is us that is interested.

If he's waiting for a 'life changing' move I doubt we'd be offering that kind of money. Like you say though, a good player, emphatic finisher. Probably out of our bracket though.

Anyone who chooses not to play whilst under contract..ie Lyle, should not be a target for our club.
It show a distinct lack of loyalty to his club and teammates.
By not playing, his club and teammates may get relegated, and this may adversely affect their futures.
It's a very selfish decision by him.

I doubt if he's got a lot left in him anyway. He's 30 now. If he was 23 - 25, I'd say snap him up, but now just let the spoilt brat get on with it!

So, your contract has 4 weeks to run. You had assumed you would have finished the season 4 weeks ago. You have signed a contract with another club on double the salary for 3 years from July 1st. This is your last chance of a contract of this type and size for the remainder of your career. It will set you and your family up for the next 10 years. Your current club (Charlton) will not cover the cost of your insurance if you get injured and jeopardize your new contract.
What would you do ????

Pay for your own insurance ?
Do your bit for your club and teammates...don't let them down.
If you've already signed the new contract for your new club, there's no real excuse for not playing.

If they start on June 20 he will only be under contract for 10 days, there's no way they're completing all the remaining games in 10 days so the reality is they are asking players to play without a contract.

So what happens if he plays and gets a career ending injury?

Legally he has signed a contract (in exchange for quite a lucrative wage), and should fulfil that contract unless injured...which he is not.
He would have be the first to kick off if the club had arbitrarily broken the contract by say, not paying him for the last 10 days of his contract because he hadn't played.

There will also be a very big signing on fee
The rules say it has to be paid over the course of the contract but it will even bigger than usual because whoever he's signing for won't have to pay a transfer fee

If he was refusing to play for Charlton ahead of a move to City we’d already be sending him heart emojis on Instagram calling him a legend.

At the end of the day he has a contract which, if he breaks, his club can sue him presumably for damages and he will have to deal with that. I don’t personally blame the bloke, he’s got one last payday if he’s thirty. Could be the difference between setting his family up for life etc....

You'd force a player that doesn't want to play in a maximum of what, 2 games, before his contract expires? Are you sure players in that situation would be giving it 100% rather than being primarily concerned in ensuring they don't pick up an injury?

What is the league doing to ensure there isn't a similar issue to the Bundesliga where the injury rate has increased?

He shouldn't need to be 'forced' to play.
He is a well paid, professional sportsman and should play for his team and his team mates.
That he's willing to screw his team and teammates futures for his own benefit is very sad.

Think there's more than a few in for shock when they realize the Championship market is going to shrink. Already clubs trying to negotiate wage cuts for next season if it starts BCD. - not just gate money but corporate sponsorship etc will be missing.
Plus can see this 15-20m salary cap being rushed through.

If Charlton agreed to cover his new contract if he get's injured then go for it. If not, which of course they won't, well then of course I wouldn't play either.
