Not sure about the James signing, with an international break wouldn’t you get him into ryton to have a look at him, bit of a fitness test ?

Mmm not really the point of this thread … this about what do we do to strengthen BEFORE the window reopens.
Unless there has been at least one free agent incoming next week, we can assume it’s happening in January.

Personally, I don’t think we’ll see anyone in, and we had problems acquiring players last January window too. So buckle up, everyone.

We can offload a couple on loan in January if we want to or sell a keeper

Some times the club has to adopt a short term strategy and take players on a years deal or loans

We were short of depth last January. We would never have taken a player like Moore but Ipswich saw a need and did.

The irony on James is that his injury record is now a lot better than previously. He played 37 games last year. His record is better than Sheaf.

There are funds as Palmer has gone.

Well off loading players in January is possible , but still easier to say than do in reality.

I was a big fan of James and wanted us to sign him last time, despite his injury record. He really made a difference and showed no signs of injury vulnerability. He opted for more money and a previous manager he had worked with, which is fair enough.

However time has moved on. Do we really see him as playing a roll or is this just a knee jerk reaction to results and Sheaf's injury?

If it's the later I would be in the avoid camp and look long term.

However if James is prepared to take a short term contract and lower his wage expectations a deal may be there? But I can't see it happening?

....In January
Might be too late by then. The midfield without Sheaf does not look anywhere near strong enough and it completes negates any benefit of having a huge amount of striking talent as they never get the ball enough.

Had you said Matty James while the window was still open I'd have said not a chance. Now it's shut and frees are our only option, how poor the midfield look and bereft of leadership and the ongoing uncertainty over Sheaf's fitness, plus the freeing up of Palmer's wages it is something that needs exploring. Not saying necessarily James is the only option and there may be other free's out there that would be suitable. but as it stands we can't risk leaving it until Jan.

Of course Sheaf may be fit next game and be able to play every game until Jan but his record doesn't look great. And then wouldn't it be nice to have someone to come in that can hold the midfield together if Sheaf needed a rest of felt a twinge, rather than having to risk it and have him out for ages again?

In part Dreamer but most free agents want a signing on fee too ( normally a sizeable 6 figure sum ) and for all we know James might want 2 years or even 2+1 ! Where as Palmer just had 1 yr left.

Interestingly our EFL squad of 25 has been submitted with just 24 names so that rather suggests we plan to bring one more in.
I was working on someone saying he was happy to come back on a 1+1 basis.

With the wages, of course no-one knows what the actual figures are, but rumours of what Palmer's wage was and that being asked by James suggest there is enough of a difference to offer a decent signing on fee and still be cost neutral.

Was told he got offered a pay as you play deal only which he said no to

Still a no from me.

Are we really that desperate? The answer is no.

Can we make do with the players we have? The answer is a resounding yes.

Keep back the wages and the signing on fee for a player that we can gain value on.

Says it all that we’ve had just two 33 year olds (or older) that we got on a free that have been ‘reasonably’ successful in our entire history.

Dennis Wise and Joe Cole.

Didn't we get Strachan on a free past that age ? McFadzean came to us at nearly 33 ,but I wouldn't take James or Fleck.

Roland Neilson wasn’t too bad nor mcallister in his second stint

He’s probably wanting a big wage and at minimum a 12 month deal.
If that weakens our move for a CM in Jan then no. Kai Andrews and Isaac Moore on stand by.
Moore hasn’t played a game for 14 months, he did his ACL twice I think. Was highly rated at the club but it’s hard to come back the same from one

Do we actually need to is the other question? Don't see the need of BEFORE ?

Judging by the players Instagram those not on international duty have been given the week off (Simms has been in Greece by the looks of it!)

Maybe it could be announced this week now the players will be training again who knows🤷‍♂️

I am just hoping that if this doesn’t happen then it’s because Sheaf is fit and ready to play on Saturday

Is 2 weeks of training running them into ground? You’d think this would be perfect time to integrate the tactical ideas into the group

if we had played and been unlucky then ok...but play and look clueless, get the fuckers training on tactics / motivation and fucking effort

Q. If Matty is that good then why has he not got a contract already somewhere ?
Asking for a friend!
Rabiot is a fully fledged French international and still hasn’t got a club so it’s not an indictment of someone’s ability if they are still a free agent
