I saw his interview for Legends’ Day and actually felt sorry for him - it was more than a bit awkward.

At the time of signing Waghorn has had a much better career than Gyok.

Gyok of course was a “punt”. Same as Walker. Young, with potential.

If anyone on here thinks Waghorn offered value for money or even potential then…

Oh I give up. Pointless
Before waghorn plays a game for Coventry, you'd sign him above max biamou , well most would based on pedigree .. what happens from that point is something that we can't change so there is ZERO point saying we shouldn't have signed waghorn .. because we did based on the fact he's a better footballer and better at this level

Not arguing with your logic - it’s sound enough.

I can however attest that at the time I stated repeatedly on here that Waghorn was a strange signing due to age and wage and didn’t fit our model.

So I did say there was no point in signing Waghorn; and I was right. (Often wrong about many things, but this one I’ll take the “told-you-so”.)

Fadz and Doyle are probably the only 31 plus players we’ve signed who’s done any good over the years, but they were signed as much for their experience and maturity in the dressing room as anything else.

Vincenti. Beavon. Waghorn. Junior Brown. Overaged any over the hill.

Waghorn: 31, apparently some off field issues (for which I sympathise), then apparently long COVID (no idea) but £13k per week.

£13 k per week. 31 year old.

Nah.

I'm not a big waghorn fan either , but he's had a much better career than max

Of course he has, but he's been shit for us and one of the worst signings of Robins time here based on the outrageous wages.

Biamou did a decent shift for a period at this level being paid peanuts.

This is all a bit mental. Not going to dig Biamou out as he was fine for us, but the way his career's gone after leaving us, if you wanted to save cash on Waghorn then you may as well have signed Postman Pat.
That made me chuckle more than it should.

At least you could rely on Pat to deliver.

Exactly this.

Keeping Max rather than signing Waghorn would have meant an extra £8-9k per week to spend / invest on other areas of the squad.

Signing 31 year old Waghorn, with no sell on potential, for high wages (sign on fee?) was one of the worst bits of business in the past few years.

Max was a reasonable back up 2 years ago. Waghorn was a waste of a much needed million quid.
He was still a better player and we went from a team that spent most of the season in the bottom third to one that spent most of last season in the top third.

He was almost the same age as Biamou yet with a far superior pedigree, it was misfortune that put paid to his career here (and generally). Or are you arguing that our superb start to the 21/22 season would have happened with Biamou in the side?

Blah blah blah.

13k per week.

Big chunk of our playing budget that could have been spent on someone younger with sell on potential.

It was poor judgement to sign him no matter how you look at it.

It’s not a difficult concept.

Even if that's true, (and Waghorn clearly went downhill post his covid bout which Robins couldn't have predicted), it wouldn't have justified keeping Biamou.
He was an inadequate striker in a team that had to scrap and scrape its way to survival and only appeared as much as he did due to injury.

Anyone advocating bringing him back has lost their mind.
People are talking (justifiably in my opinion), of getting rid of Godden and Walker in the summer and both are far superior to Max.

I would have kept him at the time as backup. Separately, I did have doubts about Waghorn as his previous season at Derby suggested he was on a downwards trajectory.

However, Biamou's subsequent (lack of!) career shows it was entirely right to not give him a contract, however harsh that sounds. Kevin the Gerbil would have had as much impact on the first team.

You've plucked that figure out of the air and base your whole argument around it, the wage will be £15k next week

It was a figure from Sky Blue Believer. Ie VO who stopped posting about internal team affairs once Hyam left.

Everyone knows who Believer was we’re just not dumb enough to out him. Somehow you’re not only dumb enough to out him but have managed to out the wrong person. Takes some doing that.

Max at 30 was a cheap squad back up who had done nothing but improve since he joined.

The mindset at the time:

Players who come to the pro game late, wear out late. Fadz for example.

No one could predict that both Max and Waghorn would go downhill quicker than Eddie the Eagle but to me, signing a 31 year old journeyman on high wages was mad. Let Max go by all means at the time, but replace with an investment rather than a burden.

Waghorn became a burden. They were looking to off him last summer. He stayed. We needed to find funds and having Waghorn off the bill would have helped.

He’s been an utterly predictable error.

Your taking two players and making a natural assumption one was moved on for the other.

it could easily and at the time more likely a choice between Gyokeres or biamou. Waghorn was probably coming anyway

Yes, I hope he gets a new club next season and restarts his career. Probably at League one, league Two level.
I’d be amazed if he got a contract with a League One club after not playing for a couple of seasons.
I think it’s more likely he’d end up in the Conference, or whatever it’s called.

Yeah but no other club in the football league would take Waghorn…

According to Dom Hyam anyway

Must admit, with so much noise going on at the tables, and Max being pretty quietly spoken, I hardly heard anything he said. Same for most except Hutch.

Christ, what a clownish thread, signing Waghorn was completely unrelated to the release of Biamou. You could definitely say we could/should have made a better signing than Waghorn for the wages that were made available, but keeping Biamou? Good grief

My lad is doing his second day of training at sky blues in the community today and I think they said there were 44 kids there

2 Man Utd
1 Liverpool
1 Man City
1 Villa
1 Burnley
1 England
There must have been at least 25 city kits and a lot were from the last couple of years it was really nice to see.

Waghorn and Biamou both scored 5 league goals the season before we signed/ released them. Waghorn's decline had already begun truth be told even though he had clearly had a good career all in all prior to that, but was not worthy of the investment made in him. Biamou was only going to slide further down the pecking order the longer he stayed with us, so in reality we should and could have done better by looking elsewhere.

I heard an interesting perspective on a podcast (UTC) the other day, can’t recall and it doesn’t matter who it was, anyway:

The number of graduates from decent academies now means there is a huge number of technically well trained and coached and mentored players who end up having to play at a lower and lower standard. It’s not uncommon for ex PL academy players to find themselves at Conf National or Conf north or south or even lower. The days of non-league players at level 6 being energetic postmen is over.

Take Charlie Wakefield. Chelsea and Eng U18. Woking.

Many in similar positions.

Max, god love him, would have been able to get L1 or been a back up for us at aged 30. I think he’ll struggle as an oft crocked 32 yo to get decent non-league.

Maybe off to Eire or Wales. What happened to Josh Pask btw ?

As for Waghorn, it’ll be interesting to see where he lands. I don’t think it’ll be above L1 and I’ll guess Scotland again.

We did take Charlie Wakefield, he was shite.

Biamou shouldnt be anywhere near a legends day. Same as Thornton, Reda etc. Demeans the day and becomes a fucking circus of shite players trotted out

Also to settle this, Biamou is fucking shit and Waghorn is also fucking shit but cost more money to be shit

Both of them i dont even give a second thought too

What legends do we actually have then? Not many, that's for sure.

It's an ex-players day, lets be honest. I've played bowls against Ken Brown. Only played for the reserves in the Jimmy Hill era then left. You can't begrudge these guys their ten minute applause every year.
