We really got lucky with Armstrong being fit for most of the season.

If Dan gets injured we are back to square one. Sordell is already injured, Kwame sounds like a long term injury, Tudgay just doesn't seem at it anymore due to age, George isn't good enough.
Sordell will be back after Bradford by the sounds of things

Perhaps we're developing relationships as well as players. Or perhaps we're being paid to take him?

Have to say i think it is to build relationships. Maybe they will assess him when he gets back in January, and if they are impressed with the improvement perhaps we will borrow more players off them during their off season.

Is it with a view to a permanent of just to develop him? Pretty sure I read somewhere that an average non star MLS player only gets paid £20-25k pa, he'd get more as a back up league one player

Yeah he's on £40k a year I think. They publish salaries over there.

Hello all, I'm a Galaxy fan and decided to come over and tell you my thoughts on McBean as to what you can reasonably expect and later down the line get some of your impressions as well.

Firstly, the minimum senior salary in MLS is $62.5k a year in 2016 (about £48k) which is what McBean is likely on. There can be four players on the reserve minimum ($51.5k, £39k) but in practice most teams only have one or two of these players and only certain young players are eligible for these contracts anyway, which McBean likely wouldn't be. We don't have his actual salary information this year because he only recently re-joined the first team (the MLS first team and 3rd tier LA Galaxy II are separate entities and bringing players up to the first team from the reserve team is limited, while loaning players down to the 2nd team is unlimited) and as a result, a 2016 MLS salary list hasn't been published since he moved back up. Only players on MLS rosters will have their salaries revealed as only MLS players have unionized. That list will likely be published on the 15th of next month. Here's the current list from May 15th if you're at all interested.

The gist of his Galaxy career is thus: He was our youngest ever MLS signing and basically didn't see much action until he got some starts in the CONCACAF Champion's League in the 2012-13 campaign and looked good. We typically play our reserve team in the CCL group stages, so McBean saw games and played well in some pretty rabid environments down in Central America. He was starting to get some minutes in MLS play in 2013 and wasn't playing poorly at all, but ended up breaking his collarbone in 2013 and when he returned he wasn't the player he once was. In 2014, we formed LA Galaxy II which plays in the third tier USL and McBean saw lots of minutes there on loan. In 2015, he was taken off the MLS roster and was on LA Galaxy II's roster full time (meaning he's not eligible for MLS games). In both the 2014 and 2015 seasons McBean was certainly a good player in that league, but wasn't dominant and many Galaxy fans, myself included, felt he wasn't progressing quickly and perhaps a change of scenery would benefit him. I think if he was released after the 2015 season, not many would be overly surprised. In 2016, he basically tore up the league. His scoring rate drastically increased and he's led the league in scoring the entire year. Due to injuries, international callups, and his good form with the reserve team, he was once again signed by the MLS team. He played in a handful of games but wasn't overly impressive. He was basically due to just be loaned down to the USL again for the rest of the season, but obviously now he's joined you guys.

In terms of play, he's kind of miscast as a target man. While he certainly has some aerial ability and strength, I don't think he utilizes it that smartly most of the time and doesn't carry the sort of "get this ball at all costs" sort of attitude that a lot of target men thrive on. In the past couple of seasons, he's been dropping deeper and orchestrating the attack more, learning that side of the game, though this year he's been focusing on finding space and making that smart run into the box rather than being a creator (which he likely will never be at a high level). In general, he sees the game fairly well but his technical ability lets him down sometimes. He often will take shots where a pass is probably better served, though he's improving at that. He is also pretty slow. He's got a good head on his shoulders though and has an ability to get into good spots and combine with the more creative players on a team.

He's certainly on an upswing at this point in his career and hopefully he can capitalize on that and score some goals for you guys. I hope he gets some minutes, but even if he doesn't, he may benefit from getting out of his comfort zone and playing with a different group of players. We don't know any of the terms of the loan yet, but I would be a little surprised if there were an option to buy in it. McBean is basically a shoe in to take the spot of our aging target man Alan Gordon next year (or at least it makes a lot of sense) so I would expect him at least be given a shot in 2017 pre-season to make the roster. That being said, I don't think he's a big enough prospect for us anymore that we would turn down a reasonable offer. I could also see it being a free loan, as we don't really get any cap relief even if you pick up his salary. In any case, I hope he does well for you and I look forward to seeing his progress.

How is the MLS viewed by players over there? Would he consider a move to England and the possibility of moving to a team in the Championship or PL down the line be something he'd be likely to consider leaving the MLS for?

Well that's detailed. Sounds he could be a decent league 1 player given the chance.
Thanks Lars

@chiefdave, McBean will likely never be able to make a Premier League roster and honestly he'd be pretty lucky to carve out a career in the Championship. Granted, I don't watch much English football so I'd take that with a grain of salt. Right now, I'd project him to eventually be a career 3rd/4th attacking option in MLS. I'd love to be wrong about that but I think right now he just needs to focus on getting minutes in a league better than the USL and go from there. It's tough for young American strikers to break through in MLS due to MLS's structure, as most attacking slots are taken by high profile or DP players. He's got some very good players ahead of him right now and a lot of young players coming through the academy who seemingly have higher ceilings, not to mention Bruce Arena (our manager) tends to favor older players. If he does well during this loan and Coventry does make an offer (with understanding that he'd be a first team player), I think it would be a good move for him. That being said, he's a home town kid and being able to live and play in your hometown holds some cache.

The managers name is Bruce arena? That's a great name!

What do you think of Robbie Keane?

Wow, a pretty in depth analysis over a period of time. In England we have expert fans who can watch a young player in one match and say: "They are shit."

Coventry City are fortunate enough to have a number of these experts.

We have watched him train for a few weeks and decided to take him in. He must have shown some promise in that time.
Do international loans count the same?

Can't get my head round why we would take a lad on a 5 month loan for U21s for him to develop, probably play 2/3 games in the first team and then head back the States. What is the point in that!
