MIDFIELD GOALSCORERS - Where Are They (1 Viewer)

The posts recently are very vociferous as to our lack of goalscoring forwards with prolific goal scoring not seen since King Dion strutted our turf.

But lets take a step backwards and extend the arguement to where are the midfield goal scorers not just within the current squad but over the last ten years.

No one has really stood out as wow this guy can certainly score goals as per one Frank Lampard does for Chelsea.

For example let us look at a few previous midfielders to assess their prowess:

Gary McAllister - (2002-2004) - 10 goals in 55 games
Michael Doyle - (2003-2011) - 20/265
Stephen Hughes - (2004-2008) - 8/144
Don Hutchison - (2005-2007) - 4/38
Dennis Wise - (2006) - 6/13
Jay Tabb - (2006-2009) - 11/95
Aarron Gunnersson - (2008-2011) - 6/123
Sammy Klingon - (2009 - ) - 5/68

I may have missed one or two out BUT the underlying trend is there we seem to have NEVER had a free scoring midfielder for at least ten years - our record is pathetic and seems will never improve.

Don't use the excuse that some of the above are holding/defensive midfielders even they should have a poke now and again as we win games by scoring not holding.

Most successful clubs have a greater goals contribution from midfield - why can't we ?

We cannot continue to rely on one or maybe two forwards chipping in as we can see we are totally devoid of goals from anywhere at the moment.

So unless we unleash some of our halfway line midfield occupiers to venture into enemy territory and fire at will (like many of our rivals scoring 20 yarders against us) we are going nowhere.

Don't forget McSheffery, he's played more game in midfield than upfront, and scored a fair few goals from midfield in his first spell with us, especially the season before he went to Brum

As Ron Farmer said at the last legends day ,it's a simple game really, you get the ball forward and when you're 15-25 yards away, you get a shot off

Understand what you're saying Johnnie, but I don't thnk we can complain at Dennis Wise's 6 goals from 13 games. Jeez, our forwards could'nt achieve that ratio (although he wasn't with us for too many games, I'd have him right now.....wouldn't you?)

God we were lucky Micky new him ,if we'd had had him for another fifteen games we would'nt be in this division

Let us not forget also that Dennis was 40 years old at the time and was still bombing from box to box scoring AND defending - what a player - and as you say Wingy he virtually kept us up single handed that season.

But I still can't understand the reluctance for our midfielders to go forward - Gael and Connor appear to operate within a 10yd X 10yd area on the pitch with balls being passed sideways and bacwards always a defensive first option - why not take it in turns to bomb forward with the other one covering.

Simples - apparantly not.

true.......he really turned the season round that year, I remeber when he came not many were keen, but he brought the best out of the other players in the squad!!

8th but miles away on points for a playoff....that has been the closest we got in 10years:(

Be great member of the coaching staff or replacement to harrison , as you said he got the best out of those around him and he's always been a great motivator which is what we really need.

Anthony Wordsworth at Colchester. 22 years old. 6 ft tall. Scores a lot of goals. Central midfielder. Certainy on AT's radar, we should be busting a gut to bring him in. If we had a board with any ambition. I can dream.

Wise was a true testimony as to how the right signing can make all the difference! He ticked all the right boxes. Unfortunately in todays game, players of his ilk are a dying breed! I'd like to think Deegs would be a relative champion of Wise's game.

None of our midfielders like to shoot from outside the box. It has frustrated me for years.

You are so right Nick

When on rare occasions we are in a long range shooting position inevitably our player needs an extra three touches to tee it up and the chance goes begging yet again.

As I mentioned earlier our opponents don't seem to have this problem and particularly last season Kieren was on many occasions rooted to the spot as 20/25 yarders whistled past him into the net.

Is this a coaching problem or are we not good enough.

Ronnie Farmer, never saw him miss a pen real engine, and certainly chipped in with other goals as well. A legend in my view, what have today is no were near him

Ronnie Farmer played for us 1958-1967 and scored 52 goals in 311 games that would be the equivalent of 9 goals per 46 game season as of today.

I think I would expect 8 to 10 goals per season from an attacking midfielder as a good contribution - I don't see that from some of our forwards let alone midfielders.

Incidently Ronnie missed only 1 penalty from 23 taken at CCFC
