I read that maton article and the man is either deluded or just saying general bollocks to make it look like he knows what he is in about.

The truth of course he is an incompetent as the rest. It's a complete shower.

About 3 weeks ago I emailed London Midland about the regulatory and capacity of trains for the new station on match. I have been away, so missed the chance for a scoop ahead of the CT! NO spin though from the train company

Here is their response anyway from 11 August:

Dear Mr Monners (see what I have done there)

Thank you for your e-mail.

This is our current position in answer to your question:

The Coventry to Nuneaton upgrade is being delivered by Coventry City Council, Centro and Warwickshire County Council. It is funded by the three partners, the Department for Transport (DfT) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

This is the first part of the authorities’ three year plan to develop the route from Nuneaton to Coventry and Coventry to Leamington Spa. Initially there will be one train per hour in each direction between Coventry and Nuneaton. Planned work on the line in 2017 will allow the service to double to two trains per hour. This will also mean extra trains could run as a ‘shuttle service’ between Coventry and Coventry Arena for events at the Ricoh stadium.

Until this work is done, the advice is to use existing bus services to get to the ground on match days and for concerts. Due to capacity restrictions, Coventry Arena station may be closed for one hour after events at the Ricoh stadium. In the meantime the station operator, London Midland, and the Ricoh Arena owners are investigating ways of providing additional services to the stadium for special events and sports matches in the future.

My original email to them:

Quick question: What are the plans for extra trains and coaches on match days at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. The station is due to open in September I believe. There are rumours that it will be one single coach train per hour (which I find hard to believe). I would be grateful if you are able to shed any light.

Slightly random perhaps, but would be good to know – I can see the service being quite heavily used on match days

Thanks
Monners

Simon must be having a field day, this story is the gift that keeps on giving. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see this picked up by the nationals.

London Midland have had their say:

London Midlan said:
Train operator London Midland insists it told Coventry City Council and the Ricoh Arena company FIVE years ago that it would not be able to supply adequate trains for fans on matchdays.

“We made it clear at the start of this, five years ago, those timetables were seen as an aspiration. We were clear additional stock would be a challenge.“There are no more diesel trains left in the UK and there are no more being built.”

But its OK as apparently Wasps are experts at running trains and are going to sort it out for them:

Wasps said:
“We are advising London Midland on alternative options so that we can continue to make it as easy as possible for people visiting the Ricoh Arena.”

this is nothing short of gross incompetence,
by London Midland, Coventry City Council, & any other party concerned, especially when you consider that the railway station was in the initial phase of the stadium development,
millions of pounds of taxpayers money has been frittered away,
whoever is responsibile should be brought to book & made to pay for what has been a clear case of deception

The station WAS in the original plans for the stadium, and if it had been up to the council it would have been built at the same time. However the Strategic Rail Authority wouldn't agree and the Gov't wouldn't stump up the money.

The £9.7m is not the total cost, the Gov't is being asked for (I think) another £2m). HOWEVER: that is for the complete NUCKLE project, which builds no just the Ricoh station, but others at Kenilworth & Bermuda Park, plus the extra bay at Cov station.

Well done Schmeeee - a rare post made when you had another (equally pro council) identity on here. Keep up the good work comrade.

At least I can get the train from town to a Tesco in the arse end of Coventry on a Wednesday afternoon providing the train doesn't break down like it regularly does on that line.

I may be wrong but I can't imagine many people getting the train for a day out at Tesco and Decathlon. And surely if the station is for the benefit of the likes of Tesco they should be the ones paying for it?

So you're not man enough to apologise. Didn't think so.

It's not even new news. It was reported back in 2013 that the Knuckle line project was way behind schedule and wouldn't be completed until 2017 with the electrification of the line meaning all rolling stock is free to use the line and capacity will be increased. Still, you carry on creaming yourself, you're clearly enjoying it.

Heard today it will only carry 75 passengers and won't run until an hour after the game has finished?

What a waste of money

What I don't get is why they claim it will link bedworth and coventry etc. Haven't there always been trains between them? Much better off just getting the bus!

Because people vote for them. It's in the hands of the taxpayers of Coventry to get rid of them.

Yes. You can get a day saver on the bus for something like £2.20 in which you can use any bus all day. And it's only 2-3 mins by car and shoppers get free parking.

“It’s a chicken and egg situation. Having a station there allows the train operators to respond to that demand at some point.”

Looks as if the council have banked on the fact that if its built the operator will have no choice but to put the service on to meet demand

sounds to me from the guardian article that Francis Thomas of London Midland has got his 'billy bullshit' hat on,
surely they should be fined for not providing the service as previously boasted,
& thomas fired with immediate effect

The council secured money from the ERDF and DT based on what service level they were told that the train providers would give.

But some of the Lego eaters on here would blame CCC for anything.

"I can't find the other sock! CCC must of lost it".
