Steven Pressley says new man Nathan Delfouneso's excited by Sky Blues challenge4 Feb 2014 06:45Coventry City boss claims Aston Villa striker has been impressed by standard of his new team-mates
Nathan Delfouneso
New signing Nathan Delfouneso has been“blown away” by his first two training sessions with the Sky Blues and can’t wait to get started against Bristol City tonight.
Unfortunately for Coventry he won’t be making his debut alongside fellow loan signing Rory Donnelly, who has returned to Swansea for personal reasons.
But manager Steven Pressley is excited about the Aston Villa striker who he believes can re-ignite City’s attack with the pace Callum Wilson provided before he got injured.
“In terms of the combination it was vital we brought someone like Nathan in and in the last two training sessions his movement has been terrific and he’s impressed me greatly,” said the City boss, who has signed former Barnet wide man Mark Marshalluntil the end of the season and will include him in today’s squad subject to his registration going through in time.
“It is very evident from the two sessions that Nathan will provide us with that speed and movement that we’ve not had since Callum’s been out of the team, and I’m really excited about that because we’ve had to adopt Franck Moussa in that position and he’s more of the Leon Clarke type in terms of linking the play.
“When you don’t have a player who can run beyond, teams can compress that area and nullify that space that Franck likes to work in. But when you’ve got someone like Nathan that will benefit Franck as well.”

Pressley insists the Villa playerhas given the whole team a lift in the wake of leading scorer Clarke’s move to Wolves, adding: “In the 11 v 11 training games it has given us that dimension we had with Callum and the players can see that. His movement and running between people is terrific and I honestly think he will be a really good signing for us.”
And the manager is confident the move will be a huge boost for the player who is desperate to live up to his early career promise.
“I think he’s excited about the chances we create and he’s been surprised by the standard and intensity of the training,” said Pressley.
“He said he’s not experienced this before; the way the players are going about it, the intensity and passing. So I think he’s been blown away by that and really excited by the challenge.
“He’s really hungry to prove himself and as a young player he carried a big burden because he was almost the next big thing from England.
"When I look at his career his best period was at Villa playing alongside a second striker in John Carew and he’s not done that in recent years.
“At Blackpool he was played on the left of a front three but he’s not played in a dual striker partnership for a good while and I think that will really benefit him.”
