Had to go to Walsgrave hospital this morning for a routine blood test, think when you get past the age of fifty you have to go even if you feel okay ? Full with people as usual but only waited half an hour so not long really. The nurse asked me if I was okay with needles ? Replied yes I'm fine why ? She said she's had patients fainting. And usually it was blokes ! It was only a small needle hardly felt a thing, so to faint they must be wimps,or have a phobia ?

I dont mind them, its the couple of seconds before when you can see it coming towards you then it's fine.

Not bothered about them as have to have blood tests regularly due to health reasons.

If you do need a blood test I've found that booking a slot online is well worth it. Last couple of times I went (after booking) I was in and out so quick I got out the car park free. Each time I was called in exactly when I booked.

I don’t mind them but I can’t watch them going in, I used to give blood until I wasn’t allowed to due to having a blood transfusion in the early 90’s.

I hate needles, even the sight of them gets to me and I even look away when I take our dog for her annual booster. I had a blood test some time ago and had to have a lie down afterwards. Strangely I have no problem with needles at the dentist.

I think you're twisting what I wrote ? Its only a light hearted thread, but you've turned it a bit serious. I've cried when I lost my parents and my son, and consoled friends and family when they've done the same. I just find it alarming to hear that a grown man would faint at a small needle in the arm, and that's all.

I have never fainted, but have had many women faint over me.

That however could possibly be down to the chloroform.

I should add that you can also book to have it done at a few chemists if it's a routine test.

Eye surgery scares the hell out of me and I will require it over the coming years as I've had the start of a Cateract over the last 3-4 years
Just can't imagine being awake while they numb me first then point whatever at it.

I hate anything to do with the eyes. Anything! Cannot watch any horror film that has any sort of eye torture or impalement and I could never, ever have contact lenses.

Always had a phobia about eyes. Hated having the 4 lots of laser surgery I recently received.

Can you be put under when they do it
Think it will be the only solution when I need it doing
Contact lenses weren't too bad for me and I became a dab hand at inserting them in the end.

I should have titled this Phobias instead ? I fear deep water as I nearly drowned as a kid, when a teacher at Walsgrave junior school, thought it was clever in pushing us nervous swimmers into the water, and standing looking when a few of us panicked and struggled to get out. And snakes give me the creeps !

Afterwards the nurse realised they had got it the wrong way round and I needed one sample, the wife half a dozen. Awesome.

I have a fear of anything going under my skin. My only tattoo is from when I was about 12. Had my nuts chopped while under on gas. At first they refused. Then said it tasted horrible. Said gas me or I'm going home.

Needed operations last couple of years. Nerve damage to my left arm. Warned them of my dislike of needles. 1st operation they tried on my right arm. I lifted the nurse off the floor that tried holding my arm down. Ended up lifting 3 nurses up that were holding my arm down. They then gassed me.

Next operation they gassed me straight away :smuggrin:

I was in hospital in 2011 for 11 days, on a penicillin drip all the time. The nurses (and doctor's) couldn't seem to get the canular in properly, and had many many tries. Some went through the vein, others did it ok but within an hour or two, I had soreness where the canular was, so they deemed it wasn't right, and tried again... So many needles i lost count.

Best of it was, they were treating me with penicillin as they thought I had an infection... turned out to be blood poisoning, which they hadn't considered at all. So, i started off not minding needles, and ended up hating the bloody things. Was fine afterwards though, never been bothered about them since.

Don't like them and always look away turning blood tests. Used to be much worse but my appendix burst when I was 12 and ended up in Thomas Cross for 7 days and must have had 100s over that time.
