This came up on an older thread. Think the council have pulled a bit of a fast one here. They announced they were closing the 50m pool in town (it turned out the council actually hadn't bothered to read the commissioned report into if it should stay open) and then when there was a predictable backlash came out about some rubbish about there being no suitable site in Cov and it not being down to Coventry to provide a 50m pool for all the swimmers in the West Midlands.CCC liaising with Sport England too
It was a pure fluke. This came up on an older thread. Think the council have pulled a bit of a fast one here. They announced they were closing the 50m pool in town (it turned out the council actually hadn't bothered to read the commissioned report into if it should stay open) and then when there was a predictable backlash came out about some rubbish about there being no suitable site in Cov and it not being down to Coventry to provide a 50m pool for all the swimmers in the West Midlands.
That's when they got Sport England involved with a vague aim of finding a suitable site in the West Midlands. Lo and behold a site magically came available at the Higgs Centre. By sheer coincidence there is another totally separate project (nobody ask why a swimming pool needs rugby facilities as part of its plans) on the same site that needs Sport England backing.
Cross party support so motion passed unanimously. CCC liaising with Sport England too.
Yes its fabulous that cross party politicians vote unanimously to spend millions on a pool to replace a seriously loss making one. I wonder what will happen with this one, placed in an area not as accessible as the previous one. Its just what the people of Coventry need something else to prop the losses up on!
By their own admission it will lose money. They claim elite athletes will use it. I assume they mean wasps. Why would any other elite athlete rock up to coventry and use it?
I believe the projected contribution is £10 million. Why the same people fretting about tax payer money at the Ricoh if we got the ground on the cheap are not up in arms about this i really don't understand.
I don't support the development one iota, but they are talking about elite swimmers/divers using that pool, can't for the life of me understand what's wrong with them going to Birmingham?
What do they class as elite? British Swimming has 32 elite swimmers in the whole of Britain. They claim elite athletes will use it.
Well the plans for the swimming pool include rugby facilities so three guess who the pool is for the benefit of - you'll probably only need one.so what's this pool for?
Surely the next one will be JR3 3D.
