Striker gets Sky Blues trial as Thorn eyes two more targets

ANDY Thorn has drafted in an experienced Brazilian striker to bolster Coventry City's attack.
The big centre-forward was due at Ryton today along with an exciting attacking German midfielder who likes to play wide, joining the Sky Blues on trial with a view to signing permanent contracts at the Ricoh Arena.

The pair will be joined at training by talented young season-long loan signings * centre-back Reece Brown from Manchester United and striker Callum Ball from Derby County * who will provide both height and presence at either end of the pitch.

Another striker is also understood to be on City's radar and close to joining the club.

The club's tally of summer recruits stands at seven so far * a figure that could rise to ten if the two triallists impress and the transfer target comes off. And with Cody McDonald, Gary Deegan and Nathan Cameron due to join back in with the squad after spending last week catching up on their pre-season fitness work at the Academy, Thorn's squad is suddenly starting to take shape with plenty of strength in depth.

“We've got a couple of boys coming in on trial who we are really excited about,“ revealed Thorn whose priority now lies with building a formidable attack.

“We'll get them in and have a good look at them but we've done our homework and hopefully they will fit in with what we want.

“The two loan players will also be in, along with Cody and Deegs, which is great because all of a sudden we have got a few more options and lots of competition. We have got all the base fitness work done up in Scotland and we can start working on our shape now with four weeks to go to the new season.“

Reflecting on the club's tour of the Highlands, Thorn said: “The trip has been a great success and I would come up again, no danger. We've been pushing people to their limits and we have come back knowing that the lads have got their base fitness under their belts.“

City suffered their second defeat of the friendly campaign, losing 3-1 to Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday following a narrow 1-0 defeat to fellow SPL side Ross County last Wednesday.

But Thorn said: “It was a good work out * just what we wanted. That was three games in five days and as I said before with Ross County, they are miles ahead of us fitness-wise, so it was a really good exercise for us and it wasn't until we tired late on that you could see their fitness advantage took its toll.

“We started really well, missed loads of chances and missed a penalty as well, but overall it has been a really good week for us.

“I was talking to Terry Butcher before the game and he was saying how fit his team are, so it was always going to be a tough test for us.

“We're four weeks away from our season so there's plenty of time to get more work done. It's been all about the core fitness up to now, which I know we have got.

“We haven't really got any injuries from the game. Shaun Jeffers has had a small strain all week and we took him off in the second half just to be careful with him but I wanted everyone to get 90 minutes again and get the game time under their belts.

“I could have made changes at the end but that wasn't the object of the exercise. We looked really tired then but we came through with no injuries.

“We can freshen up now and start to work on our team shape a bit more.“

Yeah, no mention of him in the article. Not counted in the 7+2+1 transfers/potential transfers as far as I could see.

Chances are we won't have heard if either if them. But could be good.

No but its take more than 2 games to get match fitness, if your fit you can run at one pace all day but put a change of direction at speed, ball work and when tired making the correct decision is not easy to get back. Also if you have new members to the squad and a new league to play in team bonding and shape will be taking place from now until game 1...

If this is true and they are decent league one standard, and it is s creative midfielder. Then game on. Top six minimum.

Fair enough, not in the game obviously so don't understand this. How you can become incapable of doing this stuff in a matter if a couple of months. Mind you I guess we haven t been capable of it for a lot longer than that!

Please , please tell me why any decent players would want to join a Div 1 side? If they were any good they would be on trial at a Championship side?.
Live in hope but probably just more hipe from SISU to sell a few more Season Tickets.

Hoping you've got the intelligence for it not to be a dig at a manager who wasn't even allowed a full time fitness coach last season and had a thread bare squad playing regardless of injury.

do fans really wait until they've seen who's signing before getting a season ticket?

Have a cup of happy tea mate. I'm not supporting SISU but over the last few weeks they seemed to have acted fairly professionally. Signed players without it being splashed in the media and acted very swiftly since the 'self imposed' imbargo was lifted. No one can slag anything over the last few weeks. Top back-room staff added and potentially a whole new side next season. Couldn't have really asked for more. I am purchasing my season ticket on friday

I agree with that. On one hand we moan that SISU are too tight to get a fitness coach and that we need one and on the other say that players should be fit enough to compete anyway. :thinking about:

Negative shite on a post about us potentially signing 3 more players. Get these players, lose nobody else. Then judge AT. Now just enjoy the moment.

way i see this is two more coming in on trail even if one of them turns out to sign and is a gem its a huge positive. I think from a squad point of view it looks like we are begining to have a bit of depth. I am not sure players we brought in our as good as what has left but we are in a lower leauge so we may not need the same quality. two french men a german and a brazilian surely there should be a joke here somewhere.

I think a lot of fans may have been undecided, this season about whether the owners were looking to destroy the club or not. However I would be surprised at this stage if they were still decidind

When you train regularly like a footballer does, it's easier to lose your fitness when you take a break between seasons. It's the same in most sports. If you take a long break you need train doubly hard to get back to level you were at before the break.

I know it's not the same but as an example, I'm an ex lifeguard (certificate out of date). While I was lifeguarding at Uni, I'd train at least 3 times a week swimming a mile to a mile and a quarter ever session. But then when uni closed for the summer I'd end up neglecting my training and my fitness levels would go down. Once I started up my training again, I'd have to start from scratch and begin working my way back upto the fitness levels at was at before the holiday break.

It does comes back to you quicker though than it would if you'd never trained that much before in your life but you still have to work at it.

I pay for mine and my dads. £700 quid, every year, is a lot in one lump. But like i said, we are content with the way things have gone in the last few weeks. So on Friday those damn pieces of plastic will be purchased
