Newport friendly (1 Viewer)

The link is Pressley signed them. His track record last season on signings was quite frankly shocking. Now that might be due to financial constraints placed on the club, but we have been successful in the free market before (which I admitted) so there is no reason why we can't again. I hope the players we have signed pull up trees and push us onto promotion, but you can only go on what you have seen before. Lets not forget we signed a PL player last season who most on here (not me) thought would be great at our level.
who was the premier league player?

delfouneso may have played for villa in premier league but that does not make him premier league quality, he has been consistently poor for a number of clubs at championship level, his only consistent run of scoring has come at youth international level. may I remind people Luke chadwick has won the premier league but has never been premier league standard

Pressley isnt stupid he isnt just chucking them together hes been more selective over signing ensuring they can play into his system during friendly he experimented which is what pre season is for so you can see how alternative tactics work. and the team doesn't have that many "kids" hes just trying to put through some of the youth from a good academy as Pressley is well known for, hes not running the team on kids

I think your in for a shock how bad this team will be, there's a reason why Pressley has always been dead against loan players, everybody seems to think they're going to turn into a decent team in a few weeks, no chance, it's the worst team we've ever had,

The worst team we've had in recent times is the one thorn started with in our first season in league one:

Murphy

Jordan Clarke - Reece brown - Richard Wood - hussey

Billy Daniels

Barton --------kilbane

Fleck

McDonald - Callum ball

Compare that shit storm to our team now. The only player I'd keep would be Murphy.

So you are agreeing with me then that last seasons signings were shit?

Hmmm.

Clarke, Daniels, Barton and Fleck are still here. I'd have McDonald over Miller, Murphy over Allsop and Richard Wood over Webster. Barton and Kilbane are shocking, the rest I'd say are about the same as we've got now.

This result and performance should be a reminder to SP he is behind in both game time and quality. Now game time and fitness will come with games and there is 3 more games in the next 5 days so not a problem but the quality on paper and in person is there for all to see.

As it stands this is a relegation battling team and no better. Folly to think otherwise. It has the core of a decent squad but the first team needs to be stronger. For example I actually don't mind Billy Daniels but he isn't good enough for first team but would have him as a squad player sure.

Key areas are the attack, it lacks any creativity. I dislike CT massively as he has never done a lot in my eyes and I still don't know what his role is in the team as he cant tackle, he cant pass and he has no pace and movement but just my opinion. Now I like Fleck a lot but watched him numerous times and he is a gritty hard tackler who will put in the hard yards and has a mean left foot on him. Neither however have any creativity and up front we have 2 decent players in MT and SM but there is better out there for what we should be able to get especially SM. We have sold our 2 hot firing strikers from last season for around 3.5m and not replaced our top goal scorer. Now I see Will grigg go to Mk dons and I know for around 2-300k you could get a proven goal scorer for this league. Now MT is a steal on a free but he needs a fast Wilson player with him. We have no one with pace also and this needs addressing certainly.

We need and I expect transfers in the next 10 days. Midfielders and 1 key marquee striker. Michael Higdon fits the bill for me.

FFS people we have brought in about 8 signings switched the whole team over at half time too. Don't read too much into this.

I'd be shocked if any fee's will be paid, SP might have some in the pot but not enough to get the standard he needs to replace what's been lost..He has done the only thing he can and try use the money for wages not fee's.. He must be pulling his hair out, i bet nearly 4 mill has come in since Clarke was sold and he has had to scrap around for loans, frees or fast tracking kids, while the transfer income is spent on lawyers or held to pay off possible rent arrears...They must come a time when he see's that he is in an impossible situation with regards to progress, he has moved from Scotland to a bigger club with worse problems...

Time is running out for him and the ability for the club to keep Selling a Bigi or Wilson every year or rely on a lucky draw in the cup...Sooner or later luck runs out and the level of management off the field effects on ability to compete on the field..We have sold our 4 best performers from last year and in my opinion not replaced 1 of equal ability, add that to Daniels, Thomas and J Clarke and it could end in another tough season.. I hope this is not the case but got a horrible feeling something is about to break, my only hope is it finishes with the club back home no matter what league...

All this doom and gloom predicting is very premature in my opinion.

It's only a friendly for one, and secondly, hardly any of us has seen any of the new players play. Let's see how we are after 10 games and players have bedded in before making rash conclusions as to how the season is going to pan out.

For me i don't care about results pre season, its to get game legs, build shape and understanding of each other.. My worry is i don't think we are stronger than this time last year and don't see the club having the money to change it....SP must see what is needed but is in not position to effect the lack of depth in quality the squad has...

How can you use the word shocking there without mentioning Reece Brown?

Here we go again. Some of you do this every year. It's a friendly, results are not important AT ALL. Its fitness and trial and error. Tinkering and trying new things. Like mentioned previous, he fielded 2 teams, lads haven't really had much game time in Italy with the weather. Everyone take a breath.

Linked with Michael Higdon again in todays papers. Maybe the striker we need.

ok so what if last seasons frees were shit they WERE LAST SEASONS DIFFERENT PLAYERS WHAT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND

But the fact that last seasons frees weren't great is exactly the point a lot of people are missing. A lot of people on here seem fine with losing Clarke, Wilson, Murphy etc as we will bring in more frees. If anyone says that is a risky plan it's all, this and that player were free and did well.

Of course the new players could come in and do well, and I hope they do, but equally they could come in and not be up to the job. You also have to factor in the huge number of changes, one of the advantages we had last season was that the kids coming into the team had spent a long time playing together, won't be the same situation this year. Even if 50% of the frees turn out to be great singings we're still going to have problems.

I'm starting a suicide pact off the back of losing a friendly. If SP doesn't spend a decent fee on a journeyman striker that will be it for me. Who's in?

I don't suppose for a moment this is the Newport on the Isle of Wight? :(
I could walk to the ground in 10 minutes.

You will most likely gain more members after this evenings game.. FFS its about looking at different formations and changing the teams around, giving players playing time in order to get match fit! alot of people need to take a chill pill!

Every cross so far has caused us problems.

Another corner conceded

Is there anyone willing to disagree with SW or myself about lack of height in our squad or being able to deal with high balls that has seen us pre season?

I got the usual comments from the usual people when I sad so last week..... and that was after saying we had played well otherwise. We are not saying that the players are poor. We are not saying that the players are not good enough. What we are saying is that we lack height and lose out most of the time once the ball is in the air. And it will be very obvious to anyone who sees us play.

Quick summary from me. Decent on the floor. Shit in the air.

Think that pretty much sums it up. Second half we caused more problems attacking wise when we played it into the path of Maddison and George Thomas, but defensively we allowed too many crosses, and good crosses at that, into the box, but missed a lot of headers, or were forced into clearances for corners.

It's not the worst squad by any means as I already pointed out. Thorn league one season is the worst.
