I have plenty of friends of all colours and they know I am not a racist from my behaviour and friendship.

I am sure that is the case and I don't think either Astute or I am trying to suggest you are a racist either. But as you say "from your behaviour and friendship". So they have a broader set of parameters to make a judgement about you as a person. That helps illustrate how ignorance or lack of knowledge or awareness can play a part. As those things can create fear, anxiety and misconceptions about other people and their culture. How friends and strangers might view or perceive circumstances might be totally different. It can also still offend even if they are gracious enough not to show it or just let it slide because they assume someone doesn't know it is offensive to them.

It's a generation thing. My mother cringed when we used the term black in the 1970s because she had been brought up in the 1920s/30s when the polite term was coloured. She considered black to be abrupt and rude. Since then things have switched and black is considered acceptable and coloured is not. No need to call people names like racist, ignorant etc as if the person moves in different circles they may be unaware. My mum never accepted that times had changed and would have used coloured out of habit. Having black friends or not sounds like the old chestnut, "I'm not racist but ...."
