Thought I'd touch on this as the CT has just posted an article where Badlan claims we're not in for a striker this summer. Considering our 'goals for' last season were relatively consistent with those who were relegated it's safe to say I'm pretty concerned by this.

Thoughts?

To be honest are we really surprised?

We spent a lot of money last year. If there is nobody available within budget/on a free then what is point in signings for signings sake?

I think Chaplin will come good. Think he will suit a more fluid front 4 anyway, as it means we will stop lumping it up to him, if we play it more on the floor like we did towards the end of last season.

Baka, has some raw ingredients in there to be a good striker, but needs improving. But we don't have the luxury of choice, and if as Badlan says we can get 60 goals across the 4 players rather than 30 from one, it makes a lot more sense.

We still have the potential of 3-4 loans to come in, with most of the squad looking settled with perms I wouldn't be surprised to see us take a punt on a couple of promising strikers from Champ and hopefully Bright.

I get the impression that unless a player lands on MR's lap that is far better than what we currently have, we won't be bringing in strikers on loan either.

When we played footballing side, we generaly did well.

Plus, of course, we had a bobbly pitch. Playing on a football pitch this year will be amazing.

Initially yes our creativity was shocking. But you can't deny the quality of our finishing last season was woeful across the board. I understand Badlan's POV but a striker is/was desperately needed this summer.

In terms of numbers and budget I can see why the striker isn't a priority, but surely they must be looking and if they see someone who'd improve the strikers they'd try and get them and let one or two go if necessary. We definitely need to up our conversion rate this season.

Last season a lot of the issue was the final ball and creating clear cut chances so makes a lot of sense. Also agree Hiwula could get quite a few played down the middle plus Baka could improve.

Not surprised and as I said on a previous thread, if we sign Bright on a permanent deal then I would be more than delighted with our business.

I think Chaplin playing actually upfront as a poacher will reap rewards as opposed to having him deeper where I think he isn't as effective.

Hiwula down the middle aswell with pace will cause problems and could definitely push for 20 goals considering he got 13 last season.

If Jobello and Kastaneer can get double figures as well as our CAM then that would be an upgrade.

I’d be pretty confident in an attacking quartet as follows;

Granted, the foreign wingers are a gamble and that debate has already been had on other threads, but I trust Badlan has done his homework.

Bright also hasn’t signed yet, but replace him with Bayliss and it’s still a strong attack.

I’ve always been a Hiwula fan, even when he was public enemy no1, as his movement and technique are very good. He’s prone to a lack of concentration, but I believe he’ll continue to develop this season.

Whether it’s Bright or Bayliss, those four are a strong technical attack, so as long as we get the ball down and play football, we might be ok without another striker.

Saying all that, if we do get a windfall with the Wilson money, I’d definitely splash it on a proven striker, move Chaplin on and have Hiwula as reserve striker/winger and Bakayoko as third choice.

Agree with this. To me Chaplin looks like he’s clearly a good player the issue is how to fit him in the team. I’m not sure we’re going to play a formation that suits him perfectly but think he’d do a good job in Brights spot or playing off a big man like Baka.

Add Bright to that and there should be enough goals.

Been saying this all along.

We’ve got young strikers who had a reasonable return in terms of minutes on the pitch but never got going. Better to see if they develop with time and experience than gamble the budget on another.

One thing baka is missing is the ability to win balls in the air, i would rather have biamou playing instead of Baka if we are trying to feed chaplin.

It's also easy to forget Chaplin was 21 when we signed him, after that long, drawn out process where the pressure on him to hit the ground running and carry on where McNulty left, was probably unfairly too much.

Chaplin in the 6 yard box finishing crosses from Jobello and Kastaneer is where I think he will be best.

I'd imagine plan a is wait and see if Bright can be signed, no point outlaying funds on a striker if it means we scupper any vague chance we have to recruit Bright.

if we did get someone it's going to be a gamble they pay off with goals. I'd rather saved any funds right to the end to get Bright.

I hope all you you Chaplin-believers are right. I thought he lacked at least a yard of pace and really fancied himself in the pocket rather than as a striker. And much as I love Baka, he does not terrorize a defence.
Hiwula is interesting because such a high % of his goals were individually brilliant - Bradford for example. I suspect the other teams might have his number second time round, in which case all those times when he goes awol will be really irritating

I'm worried if we fail to address last season's Achilles heel.
Maybe MR isn't ready to admit last years signings have failed him, or maybe he's hoping Ponticelli will step up, but either way we look woefully light weight up front.

REALLY???? I just don’t get the love in for a centre forward who has absolutely no idea where the goal is.
