The sky reporter on the scene reckons he can't see any effort to put the fire out. That surely cannot be right, it's been burning 90 minutes.

And right on queue, footage of fire fighters fighting the flames. I'm not sure how someone on the scene can fail to miss them ffs.

Yes they are there but they appear to be aiming a water pistol at it.

The main spire has collapsed, not sure how much of it they're going to be able to save. The roof looks completely wrecked. I suppose that's the big problem with old buildings, lots of timber and lead.

It is on an island. Not easy to get to.

It's awful watching on Sky news. I would imagine it's a very accurate reflection of what happened to ours in the blitz. It's just a shell, the entire roof is just gone.

Beautiful City, what a great shame.

A beautiful building destroyed. Awful for Paris. Now Paris fire service say they may not be able to save any of it.

This would be an incredible act of defiance and revenge if this ever turned out to be the work of terrorists .

Apparently any heavy duty firefighting that might ordinarily take place on a fire of this scale would do more damage to it than good, fighting a losing battle by the sounds of it.

Macron has pledged it will be rebuilt

A picture on Twitter I just saw actually shows the inside hasn't suffered much damage, relatively speaking that is. I'd imagine a rebuild is entirely possible, and actually easier than it could have been.

Saw this, could have been a lot worse than it seems to have ended up luckily

Yup, a massive relief in many ways.

What we forget often though is buildings are alive. They shift, they change through the ages - it's only recently that we try and preserve things in a fixed state. This is a mere scar on its history.

Not sure if this is the first time that it has suffered a fire over it's 850 years. Quite surprising if not with all those candles around. Looks fixable thankfully but having seen the repair estimates for Westminster I'd guess it will be a fortune to be paid over a very long time. I was sat in there 4 1/2 years ago with my wife and two of our daughters, marvelling at the place.

Shocking to see the pictures and live feed yesterday.
Thankfully, it looks like the walls and spans are ok.
It's a beautiful building, I really hope it can be rebuilt.
