As we now find ourself 3rd in the championship , meanwhile Notts County are 6th in the national League. We all know how pivotal getting out of L2 at the first attempt was , and it could easily have been so different. Let’s face it , had we not had gone up , we would have lost Mcnulty (as we did anyway) and a lot of other key players , and would have found it very tough to compete for promotion again. I believe relegation to non league would have been a real possibility had we failed to go up in 17/18. Imagine how much going to Birmingham in League 2 would’ve hurt us , attendances would’ve been much lower than they actually were , and we would’ve found it much harder to deal with the pandemic financially. I know it’s a huge hypothetical but We would not be anywhere if it wasn’t for that game!

Could probably have argued the Mansfield game was the pivotal game, appeared to be the turning point that season.

there’s a lot of assumptions there though - we could have sold McNulty and found another striker on the free, for a start we’d have had JCH who’d have scored goals, and won the league the following season. Ultimately we’ll never find out

I really doubt we’d have been relegated to the national league. Bolton were arguably in a worse position than we’d have been left in and they were shit for half a season and still got promoted. There’s a lot of real shit in league two

Even had we not won the playoffs that season. I do not believe we would’ve went the same way as Notts County.

Granted we’d have lost McNulty and for less than we got being a L1 club, but I felt the recruitment was set up well enough.

To rebuild the squad from the L1 relegation season and bounce back at the first time of asking was a huge achievement that is perhaps underestimated. Especially since it gave us momentum to progress as we had done.
