Oliver Kay In The Times On That Award (1 Viewer)

Oliver Kay had this to say in the Times today on that award:

Coventry City have won the Football League’s family excellence award, which recognises the “outstanding experience” provided by clubs for young fans and families this season. This is the same Coventry City whose owners, the offshoot of a Mayfair hedge fund, have alienated their fanbase by relocating 35 miles to Northampton owing to a rent dispute with the local council. Family excellence? No club in English football have done more to kill the experience of families wishing to support their local team. Unless the implication is that families are better off spending their Saturdays doing something other than watching football, this seems like a particularly sick joke.

Very true and Oliver Kay also had something to say about that in his column today. Several of the leading German clubs are scrapping their B teams because of "limited benefit" and even Bayern Munich II could only attract 328 spectators to their last home game.

According to some people on here hedge funds don't care about bad PR. According to hedge funds themselves they do.....

I'm not convinced that Sisu really do care whether or not they get bad PR. If they cared, then surely they wouldn't let TF or ML make public statements.......

I think the hedge fund is not affected by good or bad publicity . However Sepalla's credibility in the trade rides on the outcome of the 40 million so far invested . Unfortunately the fund name SISU (inner strength) leads us to surmise she will fight to the bitter end to save her reputation !

The factor of moving 35 miles would I'm afraid be considered invalid in this instance in the same way a car dealer would not be allowed to be viewed as negative from an irate customer whose car had broken down numerous times.

More in The Independent today with piece in "Last Word" comment section under title "Coventry's award is crass"

It criticises the FL and says….

"They have already failed in their duty of care to supporters by allowing the club's owners, a Mayfair based hedge fund, to relocate the club to Northampton. Rewarding those behind the move insults a generation of parents and children who will lose the habit of watching the team"

They do indeed do great work and they should be applauded for that but it's not them who have won the award.

Look at the award criteria and the comments from the football league and you'll see the award was supposedly for the club attracting more families and young fans to matches! Not sure how anyone can say that the club have done that this season.

Given their performance at the recent court case I am beginning to think that amazingly Fisher may have over egged the "batter people in court" stuff. I have a gut feeling they will turn out to be stunningly incompetent when it comes to the crunch with that too.

I would imagine The Times legal department are only mildly cacking their pants right now....

If you're referring to the David Conn article that the Trust had a letter about also from clubs legal beagles then I believe that not only is it still on the website, no ammendments or apologies were ever made either. I'm guessing Mr Conn filed his letter straight into the A-Z/miscellaneous bin shaped filling cabinet on the floor.

I mean, it was a cease and desist letter. Yes it was out of order, but it wasn't full blown legal action like some make out was it? SISU didn't have people in court trying to take everything they have which is how it is made out sometimes.

But yes, I don't agree with the way it occurred.

We were mentioned three times in The Observer today.

1. In the 'Said and Done' section which lists the outrageous element of football (it spends a lot of time on FIFA) (see http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/may/10/said-and-done-coventry-leeds)
2. In a bigger feature article, including a photo, slating The Football League (see here: http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/may/10/manchester-city-noise although you have to scroll down to read it online)
3. IN the Premier League round-up by the fans. The Arsenal fan rated us as best fans of the season and urged folk to look at us signing Twist and Shout on Youtube
