Coventry was perfectly right to decline the call. But it is not surprising that we (US) tried.
The US Olympic Team only has one striker (Duncan McGuire) on the roster. The last overage spot ended up going to Djordje Mihailovic to the exclusion of some really talented of age attacking mids like Diego Luna. The roster would have been much better served with Hadji instead of Djordje.
For Cov supporters, I would suggest keeping an eye on a few people in this tournament. There are several who could be of interest.
Miles Robinson (CD) - One of the overage selections. He is 27 but has made no secret that he is looking to jump to Europe but is being choosy about his fit. Was a free agent last winter and surprised everyone by signing with Cincinnati and not a European team. The reporting after his signing was that he took a 1+1 deal with the understanding of Cincinnati that he would showcase himself at Copa America and the Olympics and look for a move in the summer. Although Cincy may now be less willing to let him go. Devastating injuries to two other CB starters (they play a back three) has put them in a dire situation in the back.
Patrick Schulte (GK) - starting keeper for the reigning MLS champs. Great with his feet in a possession-heavy side. If the Swedish keeper target doesn't work out for Cov, Schulte is one that would make sense.
John Tolkin (LB) - kid has more swagger and confidence than just about any player you will ever see. Another that seems content waiting on the right move though which probably means a Top 5 league. Very accustomed to playing fast-pace Red Bull pressing style. Technically adept as he takes a lot of corners / free kicks. I think he would kill it with Robins and would be a Day 1 LB starter.
Duncan McGuire (ST) - had a move all set for the winter deadline to Blackburn but it fell apart due to paperwork not being submitted in time. I said at the time that he would be a great Godden replacement. Still feel that way. Late bloomer having gone the university path, but he has great in-the-box movement and a knack for scoring. My biggest concern is a regression to the mean as he has double the goals of his xG so far in his career.
