Other Sports Teams You Follow (1 Viewer)

I was just having a think after posting the Ojala thread, and thought it would be interesting to know if any of you follow any other teams around the world, and why. Here are a few of mine:

BK Häcken: Followed this team during my time in Sweden. A really good small AllSvenskan outfit who just developed their old stadium into a new compact 6,500 stadium. Looks pretty smart and isn't miles out the way for the locals as it still sits on the old site of Rambergsvallen on Hisingen Island, Göteborg.

RCD Mallorca: Spend a lot of time in Mallorca so try and go watch them at least once a year. They got relegated a couple of seasons ago and have struggled quite a bit since, although got taken over recently. They moved the team out of the centre of Palma (the capital), and the new stadium has quite a few structural defects. The whole thing pissed a lot of supporters off and killed the fanbase a little bit, but it's still a good evening out, and they recently built a temporary stand right behind the goal to increase the atmosphere a little bit.

Cricket - Warwickshire & England
American Football - Miami Dolphins
Football - have a bit of a soft spot for Bayern Munich as I've seen them with work a few times. Also occasionally Leamington when City are away. And England.

Think that's about it as other things I enjoy are individual rather than team sports.

I wish it was serious. It used to be on Channel 4 years ago - used to quite enjoy it.

Also, I like Gaelic football (Irish parents) - County Dublin (Dad's side) and a soft spot for Donegal (mum was from there)

No other football teams, less and less interested in England these days.
England cricket and Warwickshire, although stuggle to keep up to date with Warwickshire and haven't been to a game in years.
Ottawa Senators (NHL), Frolunda Indians (SHL) and Blaze in the ice hockey.

Definitely.

The stands are really steep which is cool, but that running track does leaves the pitch so far away. The new temporary stand they built aims to try and conquer that a little.

Apparently, their future plans are to make the stadium look like this, which would be the strangest looking stadium I have ever seen:

I have a mild interest in Coventry United and Blyth Spartans (my father was born in Blyth).

Rugby league-Castleford tigers(My ex gf was from there and we went to a few games,So still watch them on Sky and the odd game live)
Cricket-England and Warwickshire(Went to watch a Somerset 20/20 game in Taunton last year)

The thing that got me about Mallorca's stadium was it's just that a stadium nothing around it in the middle of nowhere with little to away fans ( I understand why) creating a Ricoh esq atmosphere

Seattle Seahawks and Orlando Magic, much like supporting Cov it's because they were the nearest teams at particular times. Also always had a thing for Roma, but when we draw them in the Champions League in a few years time that'll go straight out the window.

I'm interested in teams like St Pauli who have interesting stories behind them but I don't really follow anybody else, this basket case takes up too much time as it is.

St. Pauli is a great day out, as is HSV. German football in general and the company. Top notch.

The Verona Napoli and Palermo Catania derbies were certainly 'interesting'.

Edit: Meant to add that it was possible to watch Serie A football for around £10 and enjoy una birra during the game in the comfort of your own seat.

Used to go to watch Leamington when I lived in Coventry. Follow any Coventry based non-league teams. Also used to watch Carlton United and Sheffield FC so keep an eye out for their results.

Always had a soft spot for Juventus and also follow Lyon.

Never could understand the American obsession with college sports teams. Why is anyone interested? Is it just the money they generate? In Britain, college/university teams are meaningless.

There's a few reasons college sports are so successful

From a football perspective there is no Championship/L1/L2 where players can (somewhat unbelievably based on what we watch week in week out) get paid a professional wage, its NFL or bust. There are other leagues such as Arena football (NFL indoors) CFL (Canadian Football League) but these are different setup/rules. you'd never have an BFL version of the FA cup/challenge cup (RL)/"whatever the RU version is".

Also there are 32 NFL teams and 50 states in America, and a lot of states will have multiple NFL teams , New York, Texas etc. This means there are a lot of states where there is no NFL team, whereas every state has a college or 2 or 3.

There is also a much greater sense of community around the US colleges, a lot are there own little towns in a way the campuses are that big, whereas uni's in the UK are just built wherever there is space in a city. Americans are very proud of the unis they attended and alumnus keep strong ties with their colleges and following the sports team is the easiest way to do this.

They also play the majority of there college games on a Saturday as not to be overshadowed by the NFL who never play games on a Saturday (apart from the odd postseason game when the college season is done).

The aim of every college player is to play in the NFL so it is essentially a breeding ground for young NFL players, it also offers them the chance to get an education before they enter the pro ranks.

There is zero comparison between sports teams in UK uni's and US colleges, UK teams are for lads who go to uni with the goal of getting a degree and playing a bit of footy, who were half decent but not good enough to make it in L2/Conf (generally) they are there for the pi$$ up on a Wednesday night most of the time. US college sports are there to prepare them for the NFL.

I am a massive fan of Italian football, and have been since the early 90's when it first came onto Channel 4.

Took in 4 matches in a week earlier in the season.

Hellas Verona vs Pro Vercelli. Hellas are in Serie B this year but well supported. Their atmosphere is the most 'English' of the Italian teams as they take a lot of influence from here.

Milan vs Juventus. Stunning atmosphere, in the Curva Sud, best atmosphere I've encountered, I actually thought it outshine the Rome derby in terms of noise, although there wasn't quite the tension and threat of violence around the ground.

Atalanta vs Inter. This is a fantastic 'old school' ground and very Italian atmosphere. Possibly my favourite ground along with the San Siro.

Bologna vs Fiorentina. Another very 'southern european' type atmosphere and a beautiful stadium. Very old school, concrete bowl and big moat to keep the fans off the pitch.

Going back to Milan at Easter for the derby, but such is the Easter break in Italy that probably will only get to the one game.

Fave teams are Lazio, as they are the first Italian team I saw, but also like Atalanta, Napoli, Milan. There isn't really an Italian team I dislike, such a fantastic place to watch football despite all the issues surrounding it. Home of football passion in my eyes.

Hoping to get down to the south next season, and take in the likes of Napoli, Bari, Foggia, Lecce. Real bandit country down there...!

I lived in Verona for 3 years so saw them and Chievo quite a bit. Wasn't keen on the Hellas fans at all as a lot of them are openly fascist. I saw their promotion to Serie B which was good mind you!

For me the atmosphere is far superior in Italy to what it is here and the fans are a lot more pasdonate, I love it! The Napoli fans are brilliant...I found the friendship between some teams a bit strange and was odd seeing them cheer the other team scoring against their own.

While it may not happen for a while, a Sicilian derby is certainly an 'experience'!
