Our squad? Too big, or quality just spread too thinly? (1 Viewer)

By my reckoning, our squad now is as follows:

Position Player
1 GK Joe Murphy
13 GK Chris Dunn

2 DF Jordan Clarke
5 DF Nathan Cameron
6 DF Kévin Malaga
22 MF Josh Ruffels
24 DF Richard Wood (vice-captain)
25 DF William Edjenguélé
26 DF Jordan Willis
21 DF Cyrus Christie
28 DF Joe Henderson
31 DF Jordan Stewart
35 DF Aaron Martin (on loan from Southampton)
39 DF Blair Adams

4 MF Conor Thomas
7 MF David Bell
8 MF Carl Baker
10 MF John Fleck
11 MF Gary McSheffrey
12 MF Steve Jennings
16 MF Adam Barton
27 FW Billy Daniels
30 MF Will Roberts
32 MF Franck Moussa
34 MF Leon Lobjoit
36 MF Louis Garner
38 MF James Bailey (on loan from Derby County)

9 FW Cody McDonald
14 FW Stephen Elliott
15 FW Leon Clarke
17 FW Callum Ball (on loan from Derby County)
18 FW Shaun Jeffers (on loan at Tamworth)
19 FW Danny Philliskirk
20 FW Callum Wilson

Is it me, or is this huge for a squad in our league? Part of our losses could be dealt with by culling about a quarter of the names there, even allowing for the youth teamers.

This is the problem with a high turnover rate of managers - any boss will want to bring in his own players, but several bosses have inherited unwanted players from previous regimes and so have been unable to shape their squads properly, bringing in some new personnel but being stuck with others. Hence we have a bloated squad, enough for 2 or 3 teams.

7 of them are 18 or younger so not really part of the squad when everyone's fit, but that still leaves 28 players.

But yes our squad is too big, lacks quality and more importantly different options.

Plus there's a number of players in their that will likely not make another appearance for the club - Jeffers, Malaga, ball, philliskirk.

I expect quite a few of the others to leave at the end of the season too - e.g Elliott, wood, sheff and probably Barton.

We have a big squad but I don't think it's been used enough, particularly in midfield. There are times when Jennings, Bailey, Baker and McSheffery have looked weary but haven't been rested.

Removing season-long injuries, youngsters and people who are clearly out of the first team picture, I'd say this is the squad currently available...

13 GK Chris Dunn

2 DF Jordan Clarke
5 DF Nathan Cameron
24 DF Richard Wood (vice-captain)
25 DF William Edjenguélé
26 DF Jordan Willis
21 DF Cyrus Christie
31 DF Jordan Stewart
35 DF Aaron Martin (on loan from Southampton)
39 DF Blair Adams

4 MF Conor Thomas
7 MF David Bell
8 MF Carl Baker
10 MF John Fleck
11 MF Gary McSheffrey
12 MF Steve Jennings
16 MF Adam Barton
32 MF Franck Moussa
38 MF James Bailey (on loan from Derby County)

9 FW Cody McDonald
17 FW Callum Ball (on loan from Derby County)
20 FW Callum Wilson

I would release Elliott, his careers has been littered with injuries and he'll have only played 17 of 46 league games this season because of injury.

What a waste of a signing Ball was - 11 league appearances, even had rod above him in the pecking order at 1 stage.
