First half an hour Allen was the best player on the pitch by a distance. Lovely disguised pass for Shipley when he blazed over the bar. Wasn't really involved after that though.

People saying Shipley as cover after Hamer Sheaf and Kelly, personally from what I've seen id even have Howley ahead of him.
At least he looks like he can do more than 20 minutes and doesnt bottle every tackle going

I didn't realise that Drysdale was only 21 so there is room for an improvement I guess but, and this is nothing personal, Shipley is surely blowing his career away with lacklustre/poor performances, the guy has a great shot on him when he appears he wants to be bothered but he just keeps wasting opportunities time after time and with the likes of Jobello Hilsner and co are costing the club their combined wages for us to enable bringing in hopefully a decent player but as we all know if you keep shopping in the bargain basement those goods are not going to last long!!!

Drysdale is the same age as Ostigard, which shows how far behind he is in terms of his development, also we are rumoured to be bringing in a 23 year old centre half who will be going straight into the first team match day squad ahead of Drysdale.
If I was Drysdale, I'd be very worried about my future right now.

For context when McFadzean was 20-23 he played for Alfreton Town. Players develop at different rates. Drysdale may or may not be good enough. But just because he's not an automatic starter in the Championship at 21 doesn't mean he can't be in the future.

It's not just his age that's the issue, it's the fact that he's going backwards, and appears to be further than ever away from challenging for a first team place.
He wasnt helped last night by being in a defence that included DaCosta and Reid, but I cant honestly see him improving enough to become a championship player.
I hope for his sake that he proves me wrong.
Ostigard went on loan last year and improved considerably as a result.
Drysdale went on loan and looks worse for the experience! He's still young, but it's not looking good for him at the present time.

Ostigard is a different pedigree from Drysdale and completely out of our reach. Drysdale is 21 with experience at league 2 and league 1 level, he probably needs another loan now especially with Jake coming in but to say he's done after one performance where, no one showed anything is a bit short sighted. If we sacked off every player after one performance we'd have no one left.
Yes he needs to improve, yes he needs to learn, MR has said as much. But i'd rather give him the chance to learn than sack him off at the age of 21.

I always liked Shipley in League 1 & 2. A midfielder with an eye for a goal, left footer etc. However last season he really seemed lost at times, and his better performances at the end of the season (goals against Huddersfield & Millwall) might of papered over the cracks. I would keep Allen at this point and try and offload Shipley.

As others have said it isn't that easy to just move players on, especially this summer when club are more strapped than usual.
Having said that, I think Pask could still do a job as cover at CB and Allen can do a job CM/AM. Neither are ideal, but in our situation we could do worse. I still think there is a player in Pask he just needs a run of games in a fixed position and confidence, which come hand in hand and I don't think he'll get that with us in the Championship. I always though Allen was a technically gifted player, but he seems to make mistakes on even simple passes, perhaps confidence too.
I actually think Mason could as LB too, but we don't play with full backs and he is injured.
Shame for Shipley being 'one of our own' but he just doesn't seem to have anywhere near the fitness of a professional footballer or the intelligence for the Championship.
I want Drysdale to come good and a few Cambridge associated people I know rated him highly, but I still recall one of his first games for us in L1 (can't remember the oppositon) and he looked really slow, that isn't ideal. Hopefully another L1 loan will help.

The way I see it is that as much as we (and probably MR) would like to replace a number of players with better quality, it just can't be done. It has to be incremental so we may have to live the likes of Allen, Pask and Shipley until next season.
Hopefully, Hillsner, Jobello and Mason can be loaned out or moved on, there is still time. (I think some questions need to be asked about recruitment though)
The bright side is we still have Kelly, Godden and Eccles to come back and two more to come in regardless of above. I think we'll be fine.
Not sure on Drysdale, maybe loan him out again and give him a bit more time to prove himself.

Get Shipley out on loan in L1. He's homegrown so I wouldn't want to bin him off completely, but get him consistent games and see if he can improve.

He's nearly 24, he's played in the 1st team for 5 years and hasn't improved all that much, where do you draw the line?

After another season in L1. Get him out of his comfort zone and see if he sinks or swims. Then we'll know if he has what it takes to step up.

Fair play. I suppose a lot of what is said is aimed at others too. I notice his comments on Drysdale were pretty damming (I'm a fan of DD i'm sure that's coming across) but he said something like 'he needs to understand defending which at times, it looked like he didn't'
I think as someone opened with earlier on the thread. If you put one or two fringe players in the first team, they'd step up and bounce off the senior players. Put all fringe players in an 11 together and of course it's going to be a struggle.
