Oxford - Are they showing the way (3 Viewers)

No they aren’t.

It’s always exciting to sign new players, but as others have said, we don’t need any. We might want a few, but we are not crying out for any particular position.

The obviously worrying one is Godden (remember when people were writing him off before he got injured?), however what in form striker would join a team to knowingly play second fiddle? In which case, if we did sign a striker, it would likely be a unproven but high potential youngster. I’d prefer to have Hiwula, Bakayoko, Biamou and Ponticelli as back ups.

I don’t think CB is an issue, we have Williams and Drysdale who are both highly thought of, plus Pask who can play there.

We definitely don’t need any midfielders, as even if Kelly is injured Walsh is the obvious replacement with Westbrooke/Shipley/Eccles/Pask all capable of playing alongside him.

Plus, we have two ready made attacking midfielders ready to come back in Allen and Jones.

The only other place we may be short is a back up RWB. It’s a shame we couldn’t keep Watson as he looked a very good back up. But worst case, Pask could play there or even Westbrooke short term.

So back to the original question; I’m sure it’s an exciting time to be an Oxford fan, but it is to be a Coventry one too. I’ve said from the start of the season we have one of the strongest squads in the league and I still maintain that.

Yeah I'd say we are a Dabo Injury away from Catastrophe. He is so important to the way we play.

Difficult to get rid considering he's on a 3 year contract. Will be interesting to see what Robins decides to do with him.
Generally speaking players want to get game time
A similar situation happened with Junior Brown so it will be interesting to see how it turns out with Kasta

Junior Brown had a glowing record prior to his season with us so I doubt it was much of an issue finding him a club. Given Kasta's polar opposite record I personally struggle to see who will willingly take him on board unless we have to pay the vast majority of his wages. I know every transfer has it risks but by god did Badlan cock up on this one.

How has that singing gone so badly? He looked like a bit of a coup at the time but has done nothing for us. If it’s his attitude you’d think that would have been flagged up as part of the scouting process.

Bournemouth are in a relegation battle and you think they're going to sell their current joint top scorer for this season and their top scorer last season when Josh King is also out injured. Use common sense he's going nowhere.

Issue they have is Willson might want to move on. if they get relegated thats the end of playing for England. Its taken long enough for him to get in the team. His stock will massively drop and won't get anywhere near the amount they would want for him.

What they have going for them is the length of his contract. But this could have been done to push the price up

By all accounts from reports it's suggested that he loves it at Bournemouth as they stuck by him during his double ACL, plus he doesn't seem like the one to jump ship so I don't think he'll want to move on during this window.

His career for England is over anyway isn't it? He's now behind Kane, Abraham, Rashford, Vardy (if he gets a call up) and even Danny Ings would be heads and shoulders ahead of him this season if we're going off form. I don't think that would necessarily factor into his thinking - certainly not for the Euro's anyway.

I seem to remember a thread a few seasons back when people were saying that Bury were more ambitious than CCFC ....

No need to make signings for the sake of it I haven’t seen a better side than us this season we should be on for automatic promotion...unless we lose anyone I don’t feel we need much a striker would be good,I feel Baka,Ponti,Kastaneer should be tried to be moved on I would probably keep Hiwula for now.

I think our squad as it is now is good enough to go up.

The issue will be injuries to key players. We're well covered in midfield, but an injury to Godden or one of the centre backs leaves us a little short in those areas.

Don't think we are short at centre half at all- Pask, Williams, Drysdale and Thompson all more than capable of stepping up. In fact Robins is a huge fan of Pask wouldn't be surprised if he knocks one of the others out of the team.

Think the only position we lack depth is Striker.

Lincoln City have signed Tyreece John-Jules from Arsenal and West Ham's Conor Coventry. Two very highly rated players young players.

They’ve just got loan players though haven’t they? It’s not like they’re signing them permanently and spending money they don’t have like Bury

As things stand Coventry City are ahead of Oxford United on points. We are the team showing the way. Wouldn't swap with them.

Well loans can cost more money, especially if the squad is increased in size, but yes it is at a lesser commitment than Bury's I assume. My comment was more directed at the attitude that Oxford were somehow trying harder and by implication CCFC should spend more when we all assume they can't afford it without putting the club at risk.

Right wing back and defensive midfield both weaker than striker

Think we need a decent back up for Godden, neither Baka, Hiwula or Biamou are good enough to push us onto promotion,

In an ideal world, I'd bring in a replacement/back up for Kelly, McFadzean, and a couple of wingers, in case we need a change of formation, but as we don't, a decent back up for Godden will do.

I think once you take into account stuff like Pask being able to play DM and formation changes we are more than OK. We aren’t going to win the league with Eccles and Pask at the base, but as short term cover for a slight knock or suspension they’re OK.

We even survived Godden with a pretty lengthy layoff without falling apart completely.

It’s a shame Kastaneer and Jobello are basically unavailable (one through his own choice seemingly) because add them in and it’s a very very strong squad.

That said I’d always sign a pacy tricky winger because if I had my way the entire team would be pacy tricky wingers.

Midfield is fine. Nobody as good as Kelly. But if we lose godden that's worse than if we lose Kelly.

Agree not great at RWB, but then change formation go back to 4 at the back, and put Pask there. Not the end of the world.

Yeah if you’re going like for like RWB is the weakest position. Wakefield’s been playing there for the U23s hasn’t he?

If it stays like this today we have a game in hand and would go top with a win. Who's leading the way?
