Gill insists United will respect any decision made by veteran

Manchester United chief executive David Gill admits there is a chance Paul Scholes could retire at the end of the season.

United midfielder Scholes won his 10th Premier League crown on Saturday as the Red Devils confirmed the 19th league title in their history with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn.

The 36-year-old's contract expires at the end of June but the club are keen to tie him down for another season having again been influential in their success this term.

Scholes could yet bow out with UEFA Champions League glory, should United overcome Barcelona at Wembley later this month.

However, Gill confirmed United would prefer the veteran to commit for another season, but he will respect which ever decision Scholes makes.

Brilliant player

"It wouldn't surprise us if Paul Scholes retired," said Gill.

"On the one hand, we are enjoying the success we are having, so at the end of the season, he will have a conversation with Sir Alex (Ferguson) about that.

"I am sure he will let us know his decision and we will respect it. He has been a brilliant player for many years.

Scholes' long-standing United team-mate Ryan Giggs has already penned a one-year extension and Gill added: "It is interesting that while Ryan got his 12th title yesterday, that was Paul's 10th.

"It shows what he has achieved for us and what an absolutely fantastic player he has been."

What a man, had a fantastic career. Absolute gent off the pitch as well I believe. A lot of top managers in world football over the last ten years would have said, forget Gerrard they've rather have had Scholes. Retired from International game too soon and could have been a big player in South Africa had Capello thought to ask him in good time. Hope its not the last time I see him play but if it is, Good Luck to him. He has been a magnificent servant not only to Utd and England but also the sport as a whole over the last 20 years.

The thing is , if you still have the ability to kick a ball then carry on like kevin phillips. Now that man will have to be forced kicking and screaming to hang up his boots. Scholes has still got a few years left in him. Ok maybe not with man utd but he could still do a valuable job with lower league clubs and his experience is invaluable. Would love it to be with us but any club he could pass on his knowledge is going to help them and maybe england. I really do believe players like these have a duty to football once there careers are winding down.
