He bought him on as Charlton changed tactics and the only reason we created so much in the first half was because of their dreadful distribution out of defence.

In the second half they were dominating and hiwula was incapable of doing anything up front regarding retaining possession or even remotely worrying their defenders

For once he made a substitution that impacted the direction the match was going

We were controlling the game until we conceded a stupid goal and then the tides turned. Before that point we looked really decent apart from our ability to turn decent moves into the finished article.

Bringing on JCH just made us even more impotent and to me felt like a negative change.

Agree with every word of this except that I really enjoyed the game - a much better performance overall.

In all honesty, it was pretty average game that didn’t have a lot of chances. However, with Charlton being 4th and our run of form, a draw would’ve been a good result.

Match ratings:

Burge, 7 - made a really good save, and was solid, minus 1-2 inconsequential occasions.
Sterling, 7 - played really well in both attack and defence. Those runs down the line kept momentum in our favour, whereas we’d have probably lost the ball with other personnel there.
Willis and Hyam, 7 - solid defensively and Willis (and Sterling) made some brilliant pieces of last ditch defending. Hyam was solid and carried the ball well out in defence.
Mason, 6 - played well in my view, fizzled out a bit in the second half, but he’s more a bit more direct in attack than Brown.
Thomas, 7 - looked threatening and has excellent ball control which lets him glide past 2-3 players and still get a cross in. Needs to work on the end product though and was a bit selfish at times, despite getting the assist for Bayliss.
Kelly, 7 - midfield general, good range of passing minus the occasions he nearly got caught out in Doyle-esque fashion. Makes me think it’s tactical than an individual mistake because we’re pushed so far forward.
Bayliss, 6 - minus the goal, I’d sum up his performance in one word: pedestrian. To me, he looks tired and lacking in confidence, it’s such a shame seeing the fans turn on him. I was so glad he got the goal shortly after a fan shouted ‘ABSOLUTE SHIT!’ about 5-10m before he scored.
Shipley, 6 - does jobs that simply won’t get plaudits and credit but we seem to do better when he plays. In the past, it may be a valid criticism that he doesn’t commit to tackles, not the case yesterday.
Chaplin, 7 - got a nice assist and generally played quite well despite us not creating many chances.
Hiwula, 7 - took his chance for the goal very well. Give him and Chaplin the chance to form a partnership because tactically that’s probably what will suit us the best right now.

JCH, 6 - I don’t get the hate for him, came on and won a fair few headers which keeps momentum on side instead of having the ball constantly in our half. Intelligent sub in my view.
Davies, 6 - came on and defended well
Brown, 6 - same as Davies really, nothing special springs to mind.

We lost control at half time the goal was inevitable once the subs were introduced - we looked like we would lose the game and would have done it we’d continued with the same team

Burge, 7 - one great save and dealt with everything that he should have. Better decision making today when leaving the box. Poor distribution though, thought this had been improving lately, hopefully just a blip.
Sterling, 8 - our best player, confident and intelligent defending, always looks a threat running at defence and has a decent delivery on him.
Willis 7 - Generally solid, nearly put one of their players through on goal with a poor header when tracking back. Uses pace well to cover Sterling when he pushes forward.
Hyam, 7 - solid again.
Mason, 6 - Did well for his first start in a while, will need a run of games though.
Thomas, 7 - good when running at players but needs to develop more of an awareness of where our players are to make that final pass, crossing could be better and needs to improve his right foot otherwise defenders will find him out and nullify his threat too easily. Young lad though and progressing well, hopefully his head feels ok today.
Kelly, 7 - did all that you wanted him to really, seemed keen to keep the passing going forward, got caught from behind which put us under pressure but should have had a shout from a team mate to help him out there so not really holding it against him.
Bayliss, 6 - game of two halves for him. First half he was barely in the game but second half there were signs of the runs that we love to see him make with the ball, laying it off and continuing his run into decent places. Hopefully the goal will help his confidence and he (& Robins) have the confidence in Kelly, then the centre backs behind him, to give him the freedom to push forward and drift out of position.
Shipley, 6 - covers a lot of ground, but seemed to drift to the centre too much leaving too much space on the left for Charltons full back and winger to push into. Happier seeing Shipley taking corners than Kelly,
Chaplin, 7 - despite the criticism he's received on here I like what he offers the team, works hard, great assist for the goal (must be something about crossing against Charlton that he loves) good movement too. He needs a strike partner more Biamouesque than JCHish to play off and bring the best out of him.
Hiwula, 7 - good header for the goal, first touch let him down too often though, he's a player that looks better when he's running onto the ball.

JCH, 7 - played well off the bench, got a decent shot in that was blocked.
Davies, 6 - only on a for a few minutes and did what was asked
Brown, 6 - did ok for the time he was on.

Agree with this. It was a decent sub as the ball just kept coming back. JCH did well when he came on. I would still start with Hiwula and Chaplin (sure that will surprise you) on Saturday. Got to give the partnership another go. Also for me JCH appears to have a greater impact from the bench.

Agree with this. It was a decent sub as the ball just kept coming back. JCH did well when he came on. I would still start with Hiwula and Chaplin (sure that will surprise you) on Saturday. Got to give the partnership another go. Also for me JCH appears to have a greater impact from the bench.

Agree, JCH is better from the bench. Maybe it's a mental thing for him - when Biamou was fit there was greater competition for places but once injured complacency kicked in a bit as there was no real challenger for his starting place. Changing our style a little with Hiwula starting and proving he can grab a few goals puts the emphasis back onto JCH to earn a starting place.

As an aside, it also looks like JCH has lost a bit of weight recently and his pace has picked up a bit because of it which is good.

I thought Mason was ok, obviously shattered from not much football. Thing is if he plays mason for a few games brown could do with going in the u23. If not and we bring him in he will be blowing as well.
