Great point, haven't we sold 2 promising plahers to man city and 1 x to man utd in recent years. I know we also sold to Everton as well a few years ago. If All of those lads had stayed rather than their family seeing the ££££ signs then one or two might have made the first team.

Anyone miss reserve football (the stiffs) at least you could judge the kids against first team players and let those on the bench have a few minutes. I remember watching Bobby Gould coming on and scoring as a manager at Highfield Road and the Leigh Jenkinson step over …

Think it's important to consider the club's position when evaluating the success of the Academy. The latest two, Maddison & Eccles both made their debuts in League 1. Would they have got the chance now for example, where we are a club seemingly on the up and actively spending money on transfers?

The further up the ladder (both in league terms and spending power) we go, the harder it becomes for any potential player to make that next step. The pressure increases on the owner and manager to succeed and the likelyhood of a youngster even getting the chance to play 10 mins gets less and less.

The apparent club model we have now, kind of makes the Academy redundant it only really serves a purpose of allowing the younger members of our wider squad somewhere to play when they aren't involved in first team squads.

That's why I believe our academy is actually very successful, but we just don't see the fruition of the work as top clubs nick our players at around 16. Nearly every summer we lose at least 1 young player to a premier league club. Now not all of them would have made the break through here but you would think at least a couple would have, then all over a sudden our academy looks better. Maybe we need to improve the facilities for our kids to make them want to stay.

Could have all the facilities in the world but if Man Utd or Man City come knocking then sadly there's not much that can be done.

Where I think there is an issue is the loan deals we make to send our U21 and U18 players out to gain experience. Loans to Scotland all seem ill fated, we need arrangements with clubs that are much nearer so the Academy staff can better monitor progress and provide support.

Think it's very harsh to say the academy's a waste of time because we haven't had anyone come through since Eccles. We've had a handful of youth poached from us over the last 5 years, the kind of guys you would expect to making the step into the firsts. No disrespect to the lads left but we are effectively having the second tier of our academy come through and even then there's some players who look handy.

It’s an area I think we’re underperforming in. Eccles is the last one that’s got anywhere near the first team on a regular basis. ROI will be something King understands all too well. If we’re putting cash in to lose all the best talent we produce what is the point?

Pretty sure they class a successful academy is taking players and placing them in clubs to further their career.

For example Jay Mcgrath. Came from...mickleover? Now plays for a promotion chasing league two Doncaster.

Dinangra is at Shrewsbury

Drysdale at tranmere

That kind of thing. Whilst the hope is they make it here, 99% won't but they use it as a blueprint to future youth players, come join us and you could be a successful league 1-2 player minimum.

The best example is Sam McCallum I guess

That’s the U21s, the youth system runs up to U18, these are players signed for fees to go into the U21. But yes Mccallum was the last first team player we had from that pool of players, even longer ago!

Yes, used to go to all the reserves matches on a Tuesday night at Highfield Road and it was really interesting to see all the younger players coming through, and the ones knocking on the door. Also 1st team players coming back from injury. Remember seeing one reserves match when think it was the first time Peter Ndlovu played for us, also his brother Adam.

I think so, he was in the recently relegated Norwich team by 19/20yo, their best player and one of the best in the Championship.

Bassette would be our most relevant example and he’s a couple years off that at least.

I can remember seeing Willie Carr in a mist shrouded reserve game coming back from injury I guess. I can't remember if we even had to pay to get in, I was probably 14 or 15 at the time.

I think i'm right in saying that Sunderland have a Cat 1 academy (elite), and we have a Cat 2, so they will almost certainly attract better youth talent.
It's something which Doug and Frank will surely want to pursue in the medium term.

Literally this. Scottish football is horrendous and quite literally the opposite of the football they play at academy level. Why we have sent our biggest prospect to Motherwell I will never know, especially as our last two prospects have been to Scotland and not really progressed.

Obikwu looks the closest but it’s a long way from L2 to Champ as a striker.

Not sure what kind of compensation we have received for losing players to bigger clubs (that was the lad that went to United a few years ago as well, Irish sounding name) but presumably they provide a decent contribution to the running costs

Additional problem is agents getting involved and promising world to parents etc. they are like parasites round any kids showing talent also often against clubs wishes.
