I think that was a penalty but there was no way VAR was going to over rule the ref in a game of this magnitude!

You can't start giving fouls for avoiding contact though. Opens up all sorts of routes for cheating.

The ref might’ve still felt the attacker dangled his leg, in which case fair enough, but at least get him to double check on the screen. £100m match after all

If a defender comes through at knee high and is going to break your leg, and you move your leg out of the way to avoid contact, the player should still get sent off and a penalty be given. You can't expect the player to just stand there to take the contact.
