Michael Appleton has ef-fectively written off Benjani and Kanu from his Pompey plans for the rest of the season.
He said: ‘The message I will be sending is that I certainly wouldn’t be expecting too much from Benjani and Kanu in the run-in.'
‘I could have 25 strikers at the club but if none of them are above five goals, they are not going to be much use to anyone.'
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Stephen Henderson finally completed his move to West Ham yesterday in a deal which should net Pompey a loan fee of around £700,000.
West Brom midfielder George Thorne also extended his loan stay at Fratton Park for another month.
Only a ‘substantial’ offer will see Luke Varney leave Pompey.
That is the pledge from Michael Appleton as the clock ticks down towards the end of the emergency loan window.
Nottingham Forest have joined the pursuit of the Blues’ joint-top goalscorer, ahead of Thursday’s deadline.
In addition, Appleton is aiming to bring in loans to replace departed duo Hayden Mullins and Stephen Henderson.
However, he is unsure about which positions he will strengthen.
He added: ‘You can only play five loans and we have three in the building at the minute.
‘I will be looking to bring two in before Thursday otherwise we’ll be up the creek without a paddle.
And the latest from down south.
Sought-after Varney won’t leave on the cheap

Interesting that West Ham have paid a fee upfront for Henderson.
They have played and have beaten Portsmouth twice this season, if Portsmouth do go under, West Ham will lose six points and will effectivly be out of the automatic promotion race. So its in West Ham's best interests to pay the fee upfront.

The fee's been reported at £800k-not small money for loaning a Championship keeper.
Looks like they're about to make another signing.Michael Appleton is ‘confident’ Joel Ward will not be leaving Fratton Park.
And he believes neither will any of his team-mates after Pompey kick-started their survival push in style.
Instead, Pompey are poised to bring in new faces, with former Cardiff defender Gabor Gyepes currently on trial with the club.
so you can go into adminstration twice in 2 years and sign 2 premier lge players.
but don't file some paper work on time and you can't sign anyone.......
well up for saturday now, come on city, rather play our cov kids anyway.
Under transfer embargo for 2 different reasons but allowed to sign more players as a result of refusing to play youngsters.
He is a knob, only have to look at his previous interviews. Moaning he only has 15 senior players available when they are all on 10k+ a week when we have about 12 senior players who are on <8k a week.I'm really starting to take a dislike to Michael Appleton. The guy is clueless about wanting more players and it now appears he's blind. Comments he made ahead of Portsmouth v Hull tonight, looking back at the game against us
‘We had more of the game and more of the possession and more of the shots if you actually look at the stats'
-well i'm looking at the stats Mikey lad, and they show we had 54% possession to your 46%. From actually watching the game properly i would have been surprised if you were actually correct, but alas, you're not. Oh, you do however seem to have edged us on shots yes. But i reckon we could have upped our shots tally too if we'd taken pot shots from 40 + yards that sail harmlessly over the corner flag ala Ben Haim. You must be proud of all those attempts.
‘I am not, for one second, saying Coventry were better than us, because they weren’t'
-well we were actually wern't we? Apart from a few first half crosses which Murphy dealt with with relative ease (which all came about due to us giving the ball away, not via your good play, yes we were below par first half) and a few set pieces we conceded due a bit of nervous tackling by sitting back after taking the lead, you did nothing.
Undermines us a fair bit. If anyones interested
