The unforseen injuries or sickness of our two centre backs martin and webster , im sorry but pennington was a class above yesterday and willis was great aswel .
big difference was the distribution from these two from the back , they are so so much better ball players than webster and martin .
i cant count the aount of times webster just gives the ball away from defence when he pumps it forward , i genuinely believe this was key to yesterdays great performance , i say great as its the best i have seen us play all season in all fairness ....thoughts

Probably one of the best 90 min performances I have seen since we have been in league one. Defo the best performance of the season. We looked solid defensively and menacing on the attack. Just shows that we have the players, we just need to get a degree of consistency now.

edit: would also like to add that I don't think Webster has been too bad along with Martin, but the two young lads were vital yesterday, Pennington played countless long through balls to JOB and Jackson yesterday which really stretched the play. But I would be worried about such a me inexperienced back 4 long term as they are still bound to make mistakes at a young age. However if Pennington is released by Everton (he is 20 maybe they aren't interested) I would look to sign him perm and that could be a very good back 4 for the future if we can keep them!

Isn't Martin's loan now up? The Clarke swap deal has gone very quiet. I was hoping it would be a formality...

JOB was loving the balls played forward by Pennington. And the majority found him! Very impressive CB performance I thought. Be disappointed if he loses his place to either Martin or Webster in favour of him returning to RB. Think he's a waste in that position

Do you think Pennington and willis would have been so impressive if we had been playing someone like Bradford with that lump Hansen upfront?

As opposed to a team with one defeat from 9 ?

Lets face it, they cant have been any worse that anyone else who has dealt with Hansen in a Cov shirt the last few times we have played them

Pennington isn't little and I think he'd love that challenge. How he'd come out of it i can't be certain but I think he'd have give it a good go.

With him and Willis as a pairing, we had a bit of pace that we lack which also helped

The defence as a unit were brilliant yesterday. Very impressed with Pennington AND Willis. I'd be very disappointed if they were dropped for the next game. It's also a shame about Phillips getting injured. Anybody have an update on that?

Did we still distribute the aerial ball to Tudguy ,just curious as to whether the recent shift to that style and use of Madine has been to the detriment of our passing game ?

We were still passing it BUT, we also played a few long balls to the forward players. Tudgay did exceptionally well holding it up and getting flick ons, generally making a nuisance of himself. In all, we mixed up the play very well.

Our play was less repetitive for sure. Passes ranged from long to short, but the long ball was only played when it suited. If OBrien kept finding the space, Pennington would usually find him. If a ball went high towards the front lads, Tudgay would chase it. Still tried to pass through midfield at times, or Nouble and OBrien would try to run at their markers. Seemed a familiar shape, just with the wider players actually using the width for a change, which was nice to see.

I think pennington showed yesterday that with the right help and guidance , he could become a very good CB , can see why joe royle is keeping tabs on the lad

Given the old adage you don't change a winning team, would you put Webster, Martin and Madine straight back in?? I think one of them will have to be included if Phillips's injury is a bad one, and I'd use Martin and Pennington as cb's and Willis at rb. I would also give Tudguy another start if madine is unfit but if Nouble goes maybe they might both have to start. Makes a change to be talking about the footy again, PUSB

Believe it is a repeat of his recent knee injury so could be another 3-4 weeks out. I would put Martin in and move Willis to RB if this is the case.

its a really tough one, I think Webster has to stay out of the team now. With Phillips injury Martin will be back in. And madine or tudgay, if tudgay is as good as yesterday consistently them for me he gets the nod. But madine is someone which adds more height to the front line and has done consistently well so far as you say maybe both, but which one do you put wider?

I actually hoptheclub get rid of webster at the end of the season , he is slow , his distribution is poor and i really dont rate him at all , and in regards to madine , weirdly tudgay won far more in the air than madine ever does which is weird considering the height difference lol

Real shame if so. Phillips was excellent yesterday. I didn't see how it happened, just saw him on the floor?
Shame for Willis too, he was excellent at CB yesterday.

He went up for the header and landed awkwardly by all accounts, what I reaaly like about Phillips is he puts the team before himself like SP said yesterday. He had only done 1/2 a training session in a month and it didn't stop him putting himself forward. This is who we need at this club.

I think he is decent cover, but I think should we sign Martin and Pennington perm then he is not really needed and we should look for a younger cheated cover CB. As Webster is out of contract anyway. Yeah agree tudgay won his fair amount but I feel physically madine adds more. But would continue with a winning team as far a possible
