We're in Private Eye again (issue 1351):

PLANET FOOTBALL

Coventry City

Only one of the three companies involved in the ownership of the Sky Blues has finally managed to produce its much-delayed 2012 accounts.

The League One club's new/old owner, Otium Entertainment Group, filed its accounts on 30 September, eight months after they were due. Coventry City Football club (Holdings) and Otium's parent Sky Blues Sport & Leisure have still to file accounts that were due in February. Whether Companies House will carry out its threat, reported in the last Eye, to prosecute the directors remains to be seen.

The Otium delay may not be unrelated to the need felt by auditor BDO to add an "emphasis of matter - going concern" warning note to its report. These relate to "material uncertainties" in the forecast for Otium's continued ability to fund the club over the next 12 months.

Despite promises of funding from Otium's main backer, the Cayman Island ARVO Master Fund, managed by the club's previous hedge fund owners Sisu Capital, "there is no contractual certainty that such funding will be made available nor that loans will be called", states BDO. A £6m revolving loan facility from ARVO is due for repayment in December. ARVO helped buy the club out of administration for £1.5m.

The directors had also made forecasts of revenue that may be jeopardised by the ground-share with Northampton Town FC. "Uncertainty exists regarding the level of support and attendance...which impacts on other commercial revenues and there is no certainty that the level of revenues projected will be achieved." That would seem right on the money, given the small number of Coventry fans prepared to make the 65-mile round trip for 'home games'.

Finally, BDO cast doubt on the needed cuts in wages and overheads: "Many of these savings have yet to be implemented and uncertainty exists regarding the directors' ability to complete all of the planned savings."

Otium/Coventry director Tim Fisher signed off these accounts to May 2012 on 26 September. However, BDO did not sign off on the accounts until four days later - which suggests much discussion about its report and that vital "going concern" ability to continue in business until the next season. The BDO verdict is not reassuring for Sky Blues fans. There is "a fundamental uncertainty which may cast significant doubt over the company's ability to continue as a going concern".

'Slicker'

Glad to see Private Eye's continued investigations - perhaps any SISU apologists would like to comment on this article.

Or is this just 'normal business practice'?;)

Those that question NOPM need reminding of this:

I know what will solve all of this. Sell this fine institution, or derivatives thereof, the Ricoh. That'll solve everything.

Voilà!

It's as many of us expected, however facts are Joy Seppala and Tim Fisher continously tell us the club won't be sold and there doesn't appear to be an imminent return to the Ricoh, so if the above information is correct what does this leave us with hope of a Ricoh return, firesale of all our players, liquidation?

more likely is that we will be saddled with MORE debt from Arvo Master Fund, that and selling our players.

to the 1,500 average "home" crowd, please stay away. even if its just 1 game. make a statement once and then go back to following your team as you were.

Question is - Why would you ever trust what Seppala or Fisher said considering their rather questionable statements in the past? Private Eye aren't really exposing anything new are they.It would be great if they could reveal the identity of the investors in SISU or even give us a photograph of Joy Seppala - I'm very surprised this individual keeps such a low profile. Real investigative journalism is still lacking from this whole affair!

... or maybe it suggests BDO is not working on weekends. TF signed Thursday - delivered to BDO Friday - signed Monday. Seems pretty speedy to me.

I am more concerned about the loan facillity that is due in December.

Good spot that. I've just done a quick dig through the last few years accounts and some are signed by the auditor on the same day, whereas some have a day or two's difference. I'm not sure there's too much to read into it either, in fairness.

However, lest we forget, BDO signed off CCFC Ltd accounts in June 2012 with a note saying that the "Directors anticipate positive cash flow from ... player transfer activity". As we now know of course, there were never any players in CCFC Ltd to generate any income for that business, nor seemingly any other assets of value. Just the lease, and a whacking great debt. I wonder how they missed that, eh.

Great spot on page 33, but why ruin it with the 5 year old SISU apologists comment. There are none, just some people who see things differently to you.

Selling our players will not get us out of this situation lucky to get a couple of million for the sale of our best players .Then you start losing and even more supporters will desert our Northampton home. catch 22 invest in the team or lose supporters as the last few seasons have proved.

Used to love Private Eye, but sort of got out of the habit of buying it.

Might have to start again :)

£28/year for 26 issues if you subscribe - as amusing, thought-provoking and exasperating (when you read about the corruption and sharp practices that are exposed) as ever. Try it for a couple of issues and see what you think.

None?

AndreasB: 'It is to SISUs credit that they are struggling on.' springs to mind.

Damn! Apologies I stand corrected.

Ultimately we're all on the same side my friend - so no apology required and I appreciate and understand your overall view regarding our football team (I do read posts even though I tend not to post so much now)- unfortunately I'm unable to give our faceless 'owners' any credence whatsoever and would rather see us in the Conference without such duplicitous 'management'.

That's why I posted the Private Eye article (unfortunately unavailable online). It's succinct, and they're rarely wrong (which makes me sad as a City fan for half a century).
