We can give Steven Pressley the players for promotion, says Coventry City development director
Jun 16, 2014
Steven Pressley is back at his desk at Ryton today – and Steve Waggott says he is confident he can deliver the players the Coventry City boss needs to have a fighting chance of promotion.
The Sky Blues development director – the man who helps make deals happen at the club – says he and the manager have already held discussions with a number of targets and their advisors.
Pressley has already stated he would like to recruit two new strikers to play alongside and back up Callum Wilson, a wide player to replace Franck Moussa, a defence-minded midfielder in the David Prutton mould and a centre-half.
“I’m always optimistic we can get the squad the manager wants,” said Waggott, who will fill Pressley in on any developments on his return from holiday.
“He’s a great young manager who has done ever so well in the 15 months he’s been with us.
"I can see the way he’s constructing a really exciting model of a club with the integrated Under-18s and 21s into the first team squad, and it’s how we kick on in terms of making sure the first team is as good as we can get to make sure we kick on this year. That’s the target.”
City have already missed out on one target with former loan defender Aaron Martin agreeing to join relegated Yeovil Town in League One after leaving Birmingham City as a free agent.
Although progress in the transfer market has been slow so far in the closed season in terms of making signings, Waggott revealed there have been plenty of preliminary discussions.
“We have approached a few players who are on our target list and had meetings with players and agents,” he said.
