Pubs and Local Businesses - Nikki Sinclaire MEP (1 Viewer)

Hi folks,

my name is David and I work in the office of Nikki Sinclaire MEP who some of you may know is currently campaigning to stop the proposed groundshare. We are working tirelessly I assure you and all your emails and opinions are greatly received.

Nikki has a meeting with The Football League next Wednesday as well as several interviews with high profile news agencies in the coming hours/days.

You may not know but Nikki is heavily involved with local teams from grass routes right through to the first teams of some of our bigger club so she feels extremely passionate about your current situation.

What I would like to know and would very much help is if you have a business in and around the ground how is this going to affect you. Any facts and figures for instance if you own a local pub and your turnover on matchdays increases by 'x' percent etc etc....
A football club is very much in the heart of a community and the repercussions of Coventry City moving to Northampton could have devastating effects on all of the surrounding businesses.

your thoughts are very much appreciated, keep fighting, this is YOUR club.

I will do my best to answer any questions and forward the most popular concerns and effects to Nikki.

kind regards

Won't next wednesday be too late? The Football League make their decision today so any arguement will be tad late, no?

As a quick thought though to flesh out your info, you could try calling local pubs (Hub, Convoy, Craftsman, Cherrytree, Unicorn etc) and the car parking guys based on the A444 / M6 J3 to see how much of an effect it'd have on them. I imagine they will be hit quite badly by the move.

The Wheatsheaf will be in trouble. I made the mistake of going in there on a non match day. I was the only person in there other than Piss Pants Bob.

HI thank you for the info,

The football League do make their decision today but there are several technical avenues we are exploring to try and put a halt to it if they do go ahead with the groundshare. I plan on calling as many local businesses as I can this morning to get opinions so this is very useful.

thanks for the reply

more people trying to get press from this....too little too late I am afraid...last want out turn the lights off.

if you do hold this up...and that is a big IF - where do we play, or do we write the season off? and why are you getting involved now? talk about late in the day...

Hi thanks for your input, we are a very small team here and cover a vast array of issues across the west-midlands but the urgency of this issue has just hit another level so we are upping our campaign as a matter of urgency.

If you have any specific questions could I ask you to send them to [email protected] who is dealing with concerns as it would be unwise to discuss specifics on a public forum with pending meetings.

- there has to be a solution with the Ricoh is the short answer

apologies if I don't get back to anybody I will try my best

The "Cherry Tree" by the ground in Lythalls lane will close wothout the benefit of match day takings, Witherspoons proposed take over of the now closed "Rowely Green working Mens club" (150 yards away from the Ricoh) site will be canned I should imagine, I would imagine that the Casinio in the Rioh would be concerned as well

Haven't they got the hidden away takeaway at the bottom of the garden?

If anyone can post specific numbers and names for pubs and businesses that would be useful, the web is a mass of similar names and numbers
I spoke to the Steward of the "The Cherry Tree" toward the end of last season and he said that he was taking around £3000 on Saturday lunchtime compared to £300+ when there is no match!

The woman who ran Rowleys Green Social once said to us that on a week night she took just £17 in a whole evening. They made money hand over fist when City were at home.

The Bull and Anchor is always quite busy to be fair, I can't see it going bust without the Ricoh.

David, thanks for your input and pleased to see the letter from Ms Sinclaire.

There will be lots of local businesses who will lose out - but the main one will obviously be ACL who run the stadium; Compas, the company who have a stake in supplying the food and drink; and the Casino who do a lot of trade on match days.

Take away the income lost and ultimately it would mean people losing their jobs.

Just one quick question: as an MEP (bearing in mind Mr Cameron wants to cut red tape in the planning permission department) how likely is it that a new stadium would be built in the area? SISU talk of 3 years. Is this feasible from a legal point of view, or is it more *bs* that will be spun on the football league?

I know it will take away business but shouldn't businesses not be relying on just one source of income (one client, matchdays etc).

What did they do before the Ricoh?

The Football League are not going to care two hoots for the impact on local business - not least because whilst the area around the Ricoh may lose, the area around Sixfields will gain. Winners and losers...

Surely the approach to FL must be qustion them as to how, if they properly apply their own rules 13.4, 13.6, 13.7.2, 13.7.3 and 13.8, they can allow this groundshare to proceed

They are (in theory at least) interested and concerned with football not business related matters

These businesses were all round before the Ricoh, I don't get your point? I have ran pubs for years and any pub that relies on match-day footfall and nothing else, well deserves to go out of business and it should be the business owner held responsible for loss of jobs, I understand this will not be a popular view, I am just being honest. You can not blame Coventry City moving from The Ricoh on businesses going under...Rowleys Green Club, closed ages ago...The Convoy has struggled since the last gaffer left, the butcher is very busy everyday, in fact they would probably benefit because on Saturdays its all drinkers in there and this does effect their dry side of the business - food is where the margin is...

The effect on local business is just one avenue we are investigating, everything adds weight to the argument and especially in the current climate.

Regarding the shifting of spending to Sixfields we don't believe this will be the case, what will happen is a large proportion of people will spend their time and money elsewhere, in other industries, other industries that dont involve sport, kicking a ball around, a sport that teaches respect, physical strength and wellbeing etc etc

football always has been a huge cultural influence in England and although some would say negative influences there are many many positives that could potentially leave the immediate area of Coventry if fans become disillusioned

keep fighting!

SAVE COVENTRY CITY FOOTBALL CLUB
NIKKI SINCLAIRE MEP SAYS KEEP CCFC IN COVENTRY

The above link is on Nikki's twitter page - I'm not a twitter user but if she is taking it to the FL it needs signing by as many as possible

If you could sign the above petition that would be great - we are trying to add weight to the campaign and use our contacts within the media make sure this doesn't go too far to turn back. an empty Ricoh is madness

and why are you interested now? because you know there is a chance to get your face on the news? I know you boss craves the limelight (like all politicians) this is nonsense - I would love to know why you are getting involved now?

The Avon Mill in Rugby is run by Mac; quite a face in and around Coventry and Rugby.

Five years ago, he was running two full sized coaches to The Ricoh. One of the guys who used it was in his '90's and there were disabled folk too.

By last season, he was down to one mini-bus. Now, it'll be zero.

These pubs are the lifeline of the entirety of the day that going to the football represents. Some of you may go to games stone cold-sober, drive straight there and leave directly after. I won't judge anyone for that. However, for me, it's a chance to meet with friends old and new; have a few beers and to do the same again after the game. It's part of the very fabric of the sport. For me, and for many.

I won't want to be having a 'Hunter's Chicken' in the Hungry Horse at Sixfields with a Diet Coke and some sycophantic smiling teenager serving me, sporting his/her name on a badge and a hat made out of cardboard. If that's 'football', you can count me out

Erm that is basic marketing?

It is a bit funny all of these MP's are getting involved now, maybe if they save the day they can get voted in? Or if they act busy about it, they will get votes because of it?

Surely he has a point that businesses shouldn't put all of their eggs in one basket?

I understand your cynicism and feel free to form your own opinion on Nikki, her policies and her work within football, in 2011-2012 Nikki sponsored many local players, 11 I believe in the local area, and supported in particular Worcester City FC financially and via other promotional activities.

I cant comment any further myself but feel free to contact her via twitter or e-mail with all your concerns and I am sure she will get back to you.
