O'Brien - 7. Assertive again, though it appears he has been going to the Lee Burge School of Goalkeeper Distribution
Grimmer - 7.5. A very solid performance, capped off with a goal from a corner
McDonald - 7. Pretty good
Willis - 7. Also pretty good
Stokes - 7. Also also pretty good (really there's not much I can say about our back four in this match)
Kelly - 7. Won plenty of the ball and made a real nuisance of himself. Also his corner delivery was better than last week
Doyle - 7. More of the same, right down to allegedly offering to fight some of the home fans outside of the ground. He and Kelly are a very effective combination for this level; while we do sacrifice some central creativity, they give us some real bastardry in the middle, and outside of the occasional misplaced passes they generally keep things simple
Vincenti - 6.5. There was a passage of play in the second half that summed up my Vincenti experience so far. He had the ball on our left, and basically nearly lost it (partly under challenge, partly because he's like Bambi on ice). Yet somehow after clumsily tangling his giant legs everywhere, he sprayed an almost perfect ball out to Jones on the right (who only just failed to bring it under control). He does some things really well (and if he hadn't been fouled in the box possibly could have scored) but then has moments where you just shake your head. I still maintain he'll be a useful player for us though
Jones - 8. My personal MOTM. Took the game (and the Grimsby fullbacks) on at every opportunity. Confidence is a wonderful thing, and I hope he keeps his high
Beavon - 7. He was alright. Personally reckon that he and McNulty seemed to be more on the same page this week as opposed to last week. If we were to drop someone for the Duck to start I think it would be him though.
McNulty - 7.5. Awareness for his goal was first rate. His second half was excellent. As already stated, I thought he and Beavon worked better together this week than last.
Subs
Hyam - 6.5. Like last week, I didn't even notice him. Also like last week, that is meant as a compliment.
Nazon - 6.5. Certainly wasn't afraid to shoot in his short time on the park! I like him because he provides a real X-factor compared to our other forwards. When he goes back to Wolves in January, I hope we can find something similar
Andreu - 6. Agree with others that, even though he didn't have a huge impact, there were a few glimpses of his quality.
Overall, despite the very shaky start, it was a fairly comfortable win. I think Grimsby aren't necessarily terrible, they have a couple of very good players (Dembele in particular). If they had an actual football manager they'd be alright!
(Also FWIW, I don't think the Jones first half challenge was a penalty...that Vincenti one was a shocker though.)
