I'd be looking more at playing Waghorn alongside Godden.

Gyökeres has had a poor start to the season. Defenders have been on him and he's not had a sniff beside the goal at Sunderland.
Gyokeres despite scoring less has offered more than Godden I think. He may not be on the scoresheet as much anymore but he is still a threat and runs rings around defenders, he opens up a lot of space for the rest of the team

Eccles looked way out of his depth tonight not the answer on that showing, Allen runs about a lot but always arrives after the parties finished, Sheaf was doing his job and Allens, Waghorn was a lot better tonight but looks like his legs have gone, his head knew what to do but his body never listened, Godden dreadful, Doyle looked very good and I am not sure that Wilson touched their player

Wilson 6 - some good saves. From my angle looked like he should’ve been sent off but had to come out and close the man

Eccles 5 - was growing in to the game. Couple of decent balls into the box. Needs to get forward more as a WB. Shame he can’t stay fit.

Rose 6 - steady game.

McFadz 6 - marshalled the back line but his passing and composure was off.

Doyle 7 - grew into the game as it went on and showed some good passing. His pace worries me on the turn though.

Bidwell 6 - is getting further forward this season. Decent game but nothing special.

Sheaf 7 - only player to show a bit of composure on the ball. Don’t understand why Robins took him off.

Allen 4 - busy but no quality

Waghorn 6 - tried a lot but not much came off. Much better than what he showed for most of last season

Godden 4 - anonymous

Gyokores 5 - not in the game. Defenders know he wants to cut in on his right. Went on his left once and set up a good chance for Bidwell. Not his best game.

Dabo 5 - offered little

Palmer 6 - can see there is a player in there. Would’ve started him

Hamer 6 - has to start ahead of Allen. He gave us more attacking impetus.

Tavares N/A - not enough time to impact

Wilson 6: would be a 7 or 8 if it wasn’t for his moment of madness. Would be a 4 or 5 if it wasn’t for a couple of great saves.

Rose 6: Solid enough

Fadz 6: Gets slower by the match, still who you want challenging the forward or attacking the ball from a corner though. If we’re going to get another CB in I’d make it a new Fadz on this showing. He won’t last the season.

Doyle 8: MOTM great game from the lad. Didn’t do well with the goal but some great defending overall and at times was showing up the midfield in terms of playmaking.

Eccles 6: OK going forward, I like him in the final third passing and moving. But is not a wingback. Made one tackle all night and it injured him 😂 no sense of when to push on and when to defend either, couple of times he did the Kane thing of running back towards the CB who had the ball rather than dragging a marker away.

Sheaf 7: Thought he was alright TBH, the only quality in the middle and put his foot in well

Allen 4: Pointless. Just does nothing of note. Is never going to split a defence, take a shot, or break up an attack. Just rubs about being a nuisance and playing simple balls or tonight failing to. Why on Earth he stayed on I’ll never know, possibly has pictures of robins wanking to midget porn.

Bidwell 7: One of his better games I thought, got forward well, delivered some decent set pieces.

Waghorn 6: 4 most of the first half, 7 most of the second. I like him but like Fadz his legs have clearly gone as has any strikers luck. Intelligent player and good technically though. Much rather him at AM than Allen.

Györkeres 7: Was Vik, some great runs and a couple of nice final balls. Working on scraps most of the game though.

Godden 5: Was Godden when he doesn’t score, so basically did nothing of note.

Subs: Hamer Dabo and Palmer showed what we were missing and should’ve come on at half time or at least 60 mins.

Tavares 11: Ran really quickly when he first came on and nearly got to the ball. Good stuff.

Agree with pretty much everything said so far. A few things I would add though:

- Palmer clearly has loads of ability. Hope he stays fit, him and O'Hare could be a menace in the box
- Gyokeres and Godden doesn't seem to be working at the moment. Maybe Waghorn deserves a go alongside Vik.
- Fadz is beginning to show his age at times now. He's so bloody slow. If Doyle continues that form I wouldn't be averse to Panzo getting a game in the middle to give Fadz a rest now and then.

Really we need the box to return to relieve the pressure on the defence and to give attacking players more of a fighting chance.

Wilson - 5, lucky to have stayed on the pitch but nothing of note to really add to that

Eccles - 4, out of his league in that position, he’s being thrown under the bus really

Rose - 6, meh

McFadz, 6 - ^

Doyle - 8 - MOTM, very encouraging performance - Calm on the ball, if we’d have rescued a point we’d have been talking about that last ditch tackle in the 89th minute for weeks

Bidwell - 7, improving

Allen - 4, poor

Sheaf - 5, looked like the Sheaf from the 20/21 season at times

Waghorn - 6, okay and That shot deflected onto the bar sums up his time at this football club down to a T

Godden - 3, Poorest game I’ve seen him play for us

Gyökeres - 5, Anonymous, I seriously hope he wasn’t taking it easy as he may be moving on and it was just a poor game

SUBS

Dabo - 4, poor

Hamer - 6, Did okay, ironically our best chance came directly from one of his corners

Palmer - 7, looked lively when he come on

I’ll say it again. Wilson makes one gaffe per game and it’s a lottery if it costs us. He was luckiest man on the pitch tonight with that decision. Utter lunacy to put him back in again. Back Moore to come good or sign a new keeper.

Bidwell continuing his decent start to season. Doyle positive. Palmer showed flashes again.

The rest hopeless.

Edit. Hamer did ok. Any idea why he didn’t start?

Thanks. Surely starting him and taking him off after 60 would be better. Also I thought he played 23s last week? The selection tonight was bizarre. Almost like he had an eye on Saturday. Would’ve thought tonight was the one to target.

I felt like crying after that ‘shot’ of his at the end

Thing is I’d rather a wildly off target shot than another push five yards away cos you’re scared to, or incapable of, shooting.

Say what you like about Hamer, but I’d pay more to watch him for five minute than three seasons of Jamie Allen or Jake Bidwell, regardless of their impact on the team, and ultimately that’s what football is about.

I’m inclined to agree but I’m guessing the thinking is we’ve got a day less rest than Norwich and if you’ve got three games in a week taking the middle one out gives you more even rest breaks than one at either end.

On that note I was chuffed to see Doyle have that effort first half. Defenders backing off, good position, have a go.

The starting line up for me was a mistake can see the idea contain first half and bring the on the “big guns” to finish them off second, but it never works like that slotting into a game half way through and making an immediate impact is hard, for two together is bloody hard, three it’s fucking hard. The three subs I thought all struggled despite little flashes here £ there. Not too miffed yet but getting that first win is now paramount , what’s pissing me off we haven’t been total crap in any of the four matches but it’s points that make prizes.

The disappointing thing for me, other than Jamie Allen run about like an ageing dog trying to get the ball, is that after the game I didn't give a shit that we lost, I just accepted it. I felt I would have much rather stayed at home and watched Man City demolish Forest on the telly so thank you Shitsu and the knuckle draggers for fucking up and destroying the excitement of the new season...I am still in hope its just a temporary feeling because of all the shite we have had so far and the apparent disregard and ambition Shitsu seem to have for our beloved Coventry City FC.

Doyle was good as was Waghorn and Bidwell. Eccles was hopeless and out of his depth. I thought Wilson made some good blocks too.

Apart from that disappointing and can't help thinking of the wasted petrol from going all the way to Norwich on Saturday.

Sheaf back to giving the ball to an opposing player at every opportunity again. Would love to see the stats. Dreadful first half from the lot of them.

Thought he played well and looked up for it when he came on, but yeah that shot in our last attack of the game...

Just knew he was going to do it too
As soon as Hamer came on you can just tell he is different gravy, cut above this level in everything he does. He like all our players ned match practice and why he got 30 mins was bizarre.

In the first half he picked up the ball, had a good amount of space and time, looked up and passed it into an area where there were none of our players for miles around. It was pretty bizarre and Waghorn who was to his left just looked confused

Eccles started poor the first 10 minutes he looked injured but I thought he settled and was okay until he went off, but he is not a full back and playing him there will drain his confidence he’s a central midfielder, nothing else and needs to be top of his game too.

Lots of effort but lots of sloppy passing and giving away possession especially Sheaf. Never really controlled midfield. Didnt really create clearcut chances although Waghorn unlucky when hit bar. Often in pen area we never had the luck of ball falling kindly for anyone. It is going to be a tough season.

Steve, I understand that this season isn't going as planned - far from it for quite a few factors both in the control of the club and out of the club's control. But in general terms the negativity on this site has recently been off the scale over the last few weeks. We've played 4 games, 1 at home. Add Hamer, Palmer, a fully fit Dabo/Kane and O'Hare into yesterday's side and we're going to be more than ok. Not promotion contenders but we will hold our own. In terms of perspective we've kept our best players over through this transfer window and it wasn't so long ago that we were 10th in L2. Let's keep the support for the lads on the pitch - the unity has been key to our success over the last 4 seasons.

This won't go down well ,but think we operate so much better playing the box system and vik on his own and so far we've played 2 strikers with one positive result at Sunderland.
Very difficult to rate the players when so many are off form.

I think one of the mistakes that not only forum posters make but also club recruitment staff is to rely so heavily on stats.

Sheaf stats don’t take into account, for example, timing of pass (would a quicker release even if riskier created a better opportunity? ) pass selection (see Waghorn point)

Sheaf has improved and is a good player but he does have brainfarts far too often.

Still pedalling that nonsense?

He is one of the most progressive passers in our team and was right up there in the league last season. And he's playing as defensive midfielder. He didn't have is best game last night but formationand squad selection didn't help, with a lack of passing options with only 2 midfielders.. If you look at the centre back their pass completion rate is usually 80%+ but is was in the low 70%'s.

Here's a comparison with Jamie Allen per 90 mins this season.

In fairness, that is very low by Sheaf's usual standard. He (and the team as a whole) were unusually sloppy in possession last night.

What it does highlight for me is just how little impact Allen has on games, 20 touches less than Sheaf despite playing 30 minutes more.

Allen is just a passenger throughout most games.

Yeah he's busy and gets up and down the pitch a lot, but what does he actually offer? He is just so limited technically compared to Sheaf and Hamer. Don't think I've ever seen seen him play a pass longer than about 15 yards.

Yep I’m still peddling nonsense that stats don’t tell the full story.

Nor do highlight reels.

Player transfers are huge investments and I think deserve more due diligence.

Even if it means giving the full match videos for the entire season to a couple of club connected scouts, trainers or trusted ex pros to study over a day or three then I’d prefer that over looking at stats and CCFC diving in.

See Jobello, Kasta, and half the other silly signing we’ve made for details. How much money wasted? More than we had to age hence situations like Hyam.

Stick stats where they belong. In the hole.
