Ricoh gets a train station (1 Viewer)

This morning I saw an article in 'RailStaff' (God, my life's exciting..) about the council granting permission for a station serving the Ricoh. Apparently work will start this December and is due to be completed by December 2013. During events it is planned to run four trains an hour from Coventry and two from Nuneaton. I wonder if it will make a difference to attendances? As an ex-pat now in London I'm sure it will make travelling to home games easier for me - I find getting from Cov station to the ground currently a pain (not unbearable but certainly a hassle).

12 months to construct 2 platforms and a bus shelter, christ almighty, no wonder the country cannot get out of recession with such piss poor productivity.

It will improve access, but 2 trains per hour isn't great unless they run a special before and afterwards.

The problem is... A majority of the teams will have to go to COVENTRY station anyway and then go to Ricoh.
It will be better for congestion after the game, not that they'll be any this year!

This is brilliant news, and it will be much easier to access the Ricoh if you come by train. It saves you having to change buses or walk to pool meadow. My feeling is that they'll increase the number of trains per match when they realise it's popular.

For me, it'll shorten my journey on public transport by over half an hour, which is great!

I either get two buses or one bus which both take 1hr 20mins.

Also, I would have thought it'd be better to have more away fans.

Anything that helps get people there is great but you know what city fans are like, they will always have an excuse for not going.

Hi Nick,

Yes there are buses and I certainly wasn't suggesting it is "too hard to get to." Getting to the Ricoh has never put me off going to watch Cov (some of the awful football I've had to endure has made me think twice / question my sanity on a few occasions mind you...). As with CovKingChris though I expect it will definitely shorten my journey time and generally be more convenient than having to catch the bus from the station. Going to home games is logistically not much different from going to away games for a lot of us ex-pat fans so if it is more convenient for away fans it will be more convenient for us as well. As you say, anything that helps can only be a good thing. I wonder if it will bring in more City fans from local towns with rail links. Because of the lack of rail connection, when I lived in Rugby I always used to drive to games. If there had been a rail connection then I definitely would have used it so I could have a few beers and relax. That might sway a few armchair fans (maybe wishful thinking..)

Yesterday was actually the longest it's taken me to get out of the Ricoh in about 3 years. The usual tunnel to get across to Tesco was for some reason blocked off and everyone had to get down what looked like some newly consructed steps and go under a different tunnel. Anyone know why that was? When I finally got through I found people were skipping the queue and walking past the crowd and then back round down some ramp...I was angry!

Think it's just more of a thing forthw future, after we get back to back promotions this year and next well have tons of people flocking to the Ricoh


And I guess the shopping park has a part to play, with a train station I'm positive that the unused land Inbetween the Ricoh and the shopping park will sell quickly

it's not a bloody toy train track!!! - there is a bay platform to build at Cov station,with additionla track, signaling changes/installation, Signalling at the proposed stations at the Ricoh and Bermuda park, lengthening the platforms at Bedworth for 4 car units, possible points and crossings. let alone the situation of the contamination from the previous gas works ( remember that one from the building of the Arena the site was only cleared for the actual construction). There is, apparently, an ecolgical problem for local wildlife which has to be dealt with.

and yes I do work on the Railway and yes you did touch a nerve slagging off something you obviuosly do not understand

I'm also in London but I must say I chose to drive...2hrs door to door...can't complain! Train to Ricoh is a great idea though and I'm sure it'll help the attendance.

I think its great news. It can only be beneficial. Improved transport links will always improve attendances, even if it is just the away support!

The preferred site for Bermuda Park station is located on St. George’s Way, to the north of Griff roundabout. A plan showing the site location is shown below. The cost of constructing a station at this site is estimated to be £4.39m. Thirty ‘on-street’ car park spaces are proposed along St.George’s Way within the Highway boundary. Around 109,000 trips per year are expected to use the station with a 2 trains per hour service.

I live in Cheylesmore, a five minute walk from the station. As long as it's reasonably priced, I'll use it. If it increases the number of away fans, that can only be a good thing. A large away following tends to lead to more fans in the Cov end. Can't see it making a great difference if we're still in this league though, I think last night was one of the largest away followings we'll get this year.

for a start the WCML upgrade work was carried because much of the infrastructure was pre 1970 equipment with no major investment put in since then to the year 2000.if you knew what you were talking about you would realise that the railway system, equipment and trains have much improved. Punctuality on the WCML stands at about 98%.
Coventry to London is less than an hour journey time, 3 'fast trains' an hour as well as other trains via Northampton.

I concede that the service is expensive to mere mortals - but that is due to the privitisation of the TOCS ( train operating companies) with profit being high on the agenda - dont blame the actual people who WORK on the railway - takle a look at successive governments and their transport policies.

I thought that was what you meant - however I think the idea is that the bermuda Park busineses will benefit as well as people who work in that area. It would also mean that I could get on a train at the Ricoh, ( dont live that far away), go to the bermuda station get pissed at the Griff and catch the train home.!!!!! :claping hands:

that is not surprising when you consider that a lot of 'road construction companies' Carillion, Tarmac etc bought into the railways when the maintenance side was privitised by the conservatives. They went on to screw that up with Potters Bar, Hatfield accidents and then did a runner. Perhaps Mr Branson will jump into road construction now he has lost his franchise on the WCML - he could build a motorway toll road called the Virgin Expressway - which nobody has been on before!!!!

This station is a great idea, it should have opened when the Ricoh opened, the stadium is piss poor to get to/from with the pre book car parks, no parking zones etc, train passengers having to walk halfway across the town centre to get a bus, long overdue in my eyes.

No one's mentioned the value of the Ricoh now it's going to have a train station added. This will surely only put the price up as the whole site is even more accessible???

Regardless of what conversations are going on/not going on, this can only further dent SISUs hopes of getting something for less than it's valued???

this is excellent news!!! the transport system in Coventry is 20 years behind. aka shit. as soon as the first brick was laid at the Ricoh this should of come to fruition. and the people saying but there's buses that run there or why do we need a platform at Bermuda, get with the times people. being the heart of england Cov should be a main hub and have a network system in place like Croydons say (regular trains and trams). trains on the east side of cov and beyond are literally none existent. great news!!! pusb

maybe the club should install a match ticket outlets at Coventry and Nuneaton Station - buy the match ticket and travel on the train free or half price(some arrangement with the train operating company could be made). this could be beneficial to both the club and the TOC. City fans from tile hill, canley, rugby, nuneaton, ( sort out something for our Bedworth Fans) could also benefit.

Really good news.

So the "green transport plan" (remember that?) has finally come to fruition. Up until now it's just been hot air, as most people going to the stadium go by car, including an extra trip to pick up tickets for many.

For matches this is a good option for visiting supporters and also means those who want to drink in town and pile up to the ground before kick off can do so.

It really comes into its own with events such as big gigs and the recent Olympics whereby non-locals- possibly from overseas- can get there with the minimum of arsing around on buses/taxis, by just changing trains in Cov station.
