Like the Tipper Gore inspired warning about bad language on rock albums... that meant even bands without bad language on their albums insisted on the warning sticker, as it made them look cool?If you feel you have to put a warning on them somewhere saying at the time of writing some of the language was culturally acceptable then do
If you feel you have to put a warning on them somewhere saying at the time of writing some of the language was culturally acceptable then do but don’t rewrite them. They do something similar with Only Fools and Horses re-runs. It’s not acceptable today to refer to a corner shop in a manner it was regularly referred to in the 70’s and 80’s due to the owners origins for example, as Del Boy often does in Only Fools and Horses. Even though a lot of the owners were in fact from India not its neighbouring country.
For me it’s educational, it’s social commentary, it’s a measure of how far (the majority of us at least) have come in reshaping attitudes for the better. Writing out history is dangerous, whether that be a character’s name in a book or getting upset that the National Trust tells you where the money came from to build certain buildings, stately homes etc. Both left and right want to do it and it’s dangerous regardless of which “side” is doing it.
That’s kind of the point. In Germany they don’t shy away from education on the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany, think it’s still part of the curriculum in Germany. One of the reasons they’re so apologetic about it. I’m watching a travelogue of a Dutch woman who motorcycling around the world. Currently on the period she was in South Africa, she isn’t shying away from Netherlands involvement in South Africa and is constantly apologising, especially it’s involvement in the diamond mining history. Try mentioning the Boer war in this country and the atrocities we committed and the right lose their shit, you get someone like Rees-Mogg on question time doing cartwheels in his head to deny and water down what we did.I personally think that any history that people don't like should be instantly erased forever. Hitler was a horrible man, we should pretend it never happened.
it's weird you folk getting upset over something the Dahl family are sound with
strange folk need to be angry at something
hi alanis, still not figured out what irony is yet thenIronic.
In the extreme.Ironic.
But you chose Gerry Adams as your hero.it's weird you folk getting upset over something the Dahl family are sound with

Or when they edited out some of the Major’s lines in Fawlty Towers, missing out the entire point that his character is a parody.
Is it " updating " ?I don’t think they’re running around burning old editions of Matilda, you’ll be perfectly able to read the version you want.
I suppose you could impose some sort of rule that would prevent any work of fiction from ever being edited or updated. I’m just not that keen to restrict free speech like that.
......and then there's Love thy Neighbour ! Who always came out on top at the end of each episode ? A fact often missed amongst the choice language .Same as Alf Garnett which was a send to character

It seems Roald Dahl himself changed his original works due to his concerns about the potential racist depiction of the Oompa Lumpas.
Ffs Tony, only you could see this as an opportunity to shoehorn in something about JRM on a footie forum. Quite a skill you have thereThat’s kind of the point. Erasing or rewriting history is dangerous, you can’t learn anything from it.
That's because people don't get context.Is it " updating " ?

Maybe he just wanted to sell more books…he was very racist so I doubt that!

I think Razzle is still 18+Are there actually age restrictions on books at all?
Are there actually age restrictions on books at all?
I think they tried with American Psycho.
Not surprised!
it should be "mum's"
Clearly marked as 'original edition' and 'little bitch edition' I hope.See they’re now releasing the originals as well. Whining on the internet works people!
Almost like it was all a big marketing stuntSee they’re now releasing the originals as well. Whining on the internet works people!
Told it was a marketing campaignSee they’re now releasing the originals as well. Whining on the internet works people!
If it were me I'd be using it as a marketing ploy. Make these changes but then soon after reprint them with the original texts. Could see them sell quite a few original texts afterwards as people make a 'protest' and to show their feeling.
Sounds a bit too Nathan For You to be real…Told it was a marketing campaign
