Robins wants midfield general (1 Viewer)

Looks like Robins will be dipping into the loan market again to address this.

He was quite clear we have nobody to boss the midfield.

"I was happy with the way we started but we did seem to fade towards the end of the first half.
"MK Dons made it difficult for us at times and I think we are missing a real boss in midfield. Someone who can put their foot in and win the ball for us."

What he needs is a non footballer like Doyle......I'm sure someone on here has been saying that since before the season kicked of.....

Totally agree.

It's something we've lacked since .......... err ... Dennis Wise? Have we had anyone else since that worth his corn?

Severely lacking. Fleck, Barton, Henderson just aren't that type of player. Bailey is the only one who comes close, but he is more of a break up play Michael Doyle type player.

Speaking to club journalist Keiran Crowley after the 1-1 draw with MK Dons, Robins said: "I was happy with the way we started but we did seem to fade towards the end of the first half.
"MK Dons made it difficult for us at times and I think we are missing a real boss in midfield. Someone who can put their foot in and win the ball for us."

I've been saying Doyle quite a lot on here. I know not a lot of people liked him and he wasnt a technically brilliant footballer but he was mr 110% never gave up. put a good shift in and always done the job he needed to do. Never understood why we let him go

From what I understand he was in the last year of his contract and we offered him a 1 year extension and Sheffield offered him 2, so we decided to cash in. He never wanted to leave.

Correct me if im wrong (i may well be) but:

With Doyle we were finishing quite respectable (8th highest i think-15/16th), without Doyle we have had poor seasons (relegation eventually).
With Doyle (on loan) leeds had a good season in league 1 (think it was the year they got promoted).
With Doyle Sheffield United have had good season last year and this year so far.

could be a massive coincidence but...

Kind of simplifying it. Most of the seasons Doyle was with us we finished bottom half. All but 1 in fact, I think. I'm not saying that's his fault, just like I wouldn't say when the clubs he's been at are doing well that's down to him.

St Michael of Doyle was one of the worst footballers to play for an extended period for us. He is a symbol of our decline. A pub player, ten a penny.

How about waiting until Jennings is fit again. M ost people were mentioning how well he did each game until he got injured. Suddenly he is a forgotten man.

This is an obvious point. We need a 'Wise' figure head in the middle. Been saying so before the season started.
Problem is, who? Who is available?

...actually looking around in the championship because doubtful we could get anyone from the prem on loan and seeing who are not playing hardly if at all and these names pop up:

Michael Brown (leeds) J Arca ( Boro') Johnathan Greening (Forest) Steve Hunt (Wolves) David Dunn (Blackburn) and where ever he is Jimmy Bullard? (Knees permitting)

Could any of those be our man?

Yeah he was on a good whack and we wanted to cash in, but we did allegedly offer him an extra year albeit on reduced terms

Try "half the money": we didn't want to keep him really, we couldn't afford him. So we gave him away at the exact point that all the other CM's were injured..

That's one of the worries, he's not been great either! Similar to Bailey, breaks up play a bit but very hit-and-miss with distribution and decision making. Doyle was relatively composed, as well as being much more energetic than they are..and a better passer than Moussa..Jesus our players are actually that bad now!

MK Dons had that lad in centre midfield and he bossed the game, it shows what can happen when you have a decent hard working player who likes to get stuck in.

Funny you should say that, cos I forgot him.

Out of our current lot you would have to say Bailey or Jennings best suited for that role.

Jimmy Bullard announced his retirement from the game on Tuesday so I think we can cross him off the list

Bar Sheffield Utd and First half against Bury, Jennings has been very poor. He's a poor version of Doyle.

Jennings gets caught in possession very easily but hopefully with a bit of fitness and coaching he could turn out ok .

I agree - he has been a dissapointment.

He must be the only pub player to make nearly 400 appearances in the Championship and League One.

I reckon connor thomas could be that player
I agree 100%. I thought he was outstanding against Boro last season. He litterally won every second ball going in the middle of the park. Can't wait to have him back. It's also worth noting that he is the fittest player in the squad and won the bleep test.....

I think con tom will be good this year. If he dont step up to the plate this season he wont make the grade at all. Hes not far away now

You are wrong. I don't believe you understand what he did for the team.

He is an example of his poor skills..
