I was talking the other day to somebody about modern football , and we came to the conclusion that there just isnt the amount of GREAT players of ERAs gone by now .I know he loves himself but you have to say he is one hell of a footballer. He's just equalled the Real Madrid scoring record and has just notched his 500th career goal and will no doubt go on to bang in many more.So you have to put him up there with the all time greats even though Messi is alongside him without a doubt. But is he on a par with Maradona,Pele,Eusebio,Puskas ? Different eras etc but he has to be in there now ?
My late father would always say that the players of his time were the best and I've said the same to my sons so it's nothing new is it ? Football today is less physical than it has ever been and any contact is minimal,so when I look back at the likes of Best getting battered by hard defenders and still somehow mesmerizing us with his ball skills, you have to say what would he have been like if he was playing today ? But players can only play in the era they are in, so the likes of Ronaldo and Messi have to have the recognition they deserve don't they ?I was talking the other day to somebody about modern football , and we came to the conclusion that there just isnt the amount of GREAT players of ERAs gone by now .
i believe the reason that messi and ronaldo stand out so much is the gap between them and all others is huge , wheras 10-15 years ago there were so many more world class legendary players if you will .
for example when does messi ever have to come up against a defence consisting of quality like maldini nesta cafu or roberto carlos ?
where are the zidanes , ronaldhinos , vieras , or scholes type players these days , if you go through each national side only 1 or 2 teams are better than their counterparts from the last era ..
they are great players no doubt , but i think we are in an era where its simply too easy for them , especially in the brilliant sides they play in

I wrote an article recently for an online football magazine on the Mighty Magyars the great Hungary national team that came to Wembley and beat England 6-3 in 1953.England until that day were unbeaten at home and were red hot favourites but were outclassed by the football the Hungarians played as it was new and with tactics never seen before. And the Magyars style of play was the prototype for football in the future and Puskas was doing "Cruyff " turns long before the great Dutchman.Check them out you'll be surprised at just how good they were !Players like Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo and Messi were/are great individuals but what do they do for the team other than score goals? Cruyff invented a new way of playing football that had never been seen before and still influences the game today. And of course, he could play anywhere on the pitch and scored a lot of goals for what was a minor footballing nation.
Ronaldo's stats are up there with the very best, but looking at with your eyes in general play, in my opinion he is nowhere near the level of the Messi's, Zidane's, Cryuff's, Maradonna's etc. He's a phenomenal goalscorer but if he's not scoring he doesn't offer you a lot, whereas Messi is a brilliant technician, he doesn't need to hit the net to play well, he has so many more attributes from a technical standpoint I find it very hard to compare the two, as for me it's not a debate. Messi is clearly the better football player.
wow.

I think you'll find in the last 2 years the number of assists that Ronaldo has provided has gone up, and is pretty much on a par with Messi.Go on then? Not denying Ronaldo is brilliant but as an avid La Liga watcher it's clear to see that Ronaldo's all round game over the past 2 years has massively dipped apart from his goal scoring.
Technically he is nowhere near Messi however he is the better athlete.

The day Messi comes to the PL and scores 30+ goals in a season then I'll believe he is as good as Ronaldo
So let's get this right. Ronaldo scored 60 goals last season and provided 25 odd assists, but this doesn't count because he's not dribbling enough?? What planet are you on mate? From a stats point it is yes, but watching a game generally, with your eyes Messi has a far bigger impact on all round play. Assists I don't really count, key passes and final third dribbles are more important statistics for attacking players than assists.

Oh behave ffs. This is a typical British comment. Both of them have been playing in the same league for 7 seasons now both in their peak years. Both of them play in the best league in the world, if you don't think Messi could come over to England and produce then you are seriously deluded.
I didn't say he couldn't... But let's be honest he has had a generally easy ride in La Liga his whole career. Yes he's been great in CL too surrounded by some other excellent players. Let's see if his superior technical ability can produce the same results in PL or Bundesliga.
This is why I believe that Ronaldo is better overall.
How is it an easy ride in Spain? Please tell me. You just watch the likes of Getafe and Levante vs Real/Barca where they will look shit. Look how shit Barca made Man City look playing in 2nd gear.
The Premier League is drummed down our throats 24/7, we know every player from every team so it's natural to think the PL is better, but it's really not. You only have to see the performances of our teams in Europe over the past couple of years to see how inferior we are.
I don't actually think the PL is a superior league in terms of technical ability. I think European performances show clearly that the competitive and physical nature of the PL takes it toll. Barcelona are only challenged in about 15% of their league games... the rest are glorified exhibition matches.
Can Messi hack it in the PL with his technical ability within a physically challenging league? Quite possibly but I'd like to see it. Ronaldo has already proven he can.

What is this proving?
I think he'd hack it quite well for Man U. but not so well for Sunderland or Newcastle. Can Messi hack it in the PL with his technical ability within a physically challenging league? Quite possibly but I'd like to see it. Ronaldo has already proven he can.

In the last 2 seasons
Messi 103 apps 99 goals 42 assists
Ronaldo 101 apps 112 goals 37 assists.
Just writing them stats makes you realise how ridiculous their records are
But you have to take into account they both play for the two teams that dominate their league and are virtually guaranteed to finish top or runners up of the league every season. Clearly most of the other teams are outclassed in every game. Here's the La Liga stats on that:

Anyone who watched the game tonight would understand my points fully. His overall influence on a game (especially big ones in diminishing)
