I can't say I am bothered, I think it is a drain on public funds and policing etc.

It is quite funny that it has just shown Tara Palmer Tomkinson turn up to a Royal Wedding, a woman who's nose is mangled from too much snorting Coke.

I go to put Jeremy Kyle on and it is full of people talking about hats? What is the world coming to.

I am so Anti-Royal!!! I'm furious at the cost of this pathetic drain on public money! Who is paying the small companies to shut down for the day? They can't afford it! Who is footing the millions of pounds its costing for police security, cost of the armed forces security, fuel for fly-pasts and other huge vehicles, closing half of one of the most important citys in the world? Their answer to all that would be "But it brings in tourists!" Bollox! Tourist won't be spending what this little lot has cost!

While I have got up in a foul one this morning, I should also say the UK should abolish royalty, become a Republic, get rid of the House of Lords, get rid of all the "Sirs", the "Barons", the "Earls", the "Lords", the "Viscounts" and any other pompous titles I may have omitted. Get rid of the class system, period. By the way, I'm a humanist as well.

'Ordinary bloke' who just happens to be born into a life of wealth and luxury funded by the taxpayer - I don't know anybody even slightly interested in this wedding yet the fawning media have tried to whip us all into a frenzy over it - well it's a pity we didn't have the option to air our views in the last census, because I'm sure the vast majority would tick the box that said 'REPUBLICAN'! At least we were able to say 'No Religion' in the last census [I'm a humanist too - secular, humanist, socialist, republican and proud of it!].

Same here! I'm totally anti-royal, I'm a total atheist and believe we should be a republic! It'll never happen in my time though! (The Frogs managed it as well as a few other countries!)

I'm just the right side of 60 (58). I had a look at the quiz but it is set from the Humanist own website, so isn't it a bit "either / or"? There wasn't a result for being an atheist. My answers all pointed towards being a "Humanist" whatever that is. I consider myself a total atheist because I do not believe in the existance of any god-like thing. I was brought up (actually dragged up and beaten up) as a Roman Catholic in a convent full of frustrated nuns and queer priests. However, I respect ALL religions and allow others to have their beliefs whether they be christian, muslim, sikh, hindu, or whatever. I suppose the nearest thing I would call myself is Buddhist although that is not strictly a religion - more a way of life. Anyway, I'm not really one to harp on about religion on a footie site, so I'll leave it there otherwise Nick will slap me!

I'm not at all surprised at the result - I'm 53 and our 'religious education' would not have included atheist/agnostic/humanist viewpoints. Here's a short definition of Humanism: http://www.humanism.org.uk/humanism. As you can see it's a philosophy and not a religion. You can be a 'total atheist' and a humanist!

Maybe we could get them a gig here in Florida at Disney World walking around with Snow White and Mickey Mouse... Excellent - 20 odd posts for peopel saying they don't care. If you sdon't care why comment? do you phone up the television polls to register a vote for "Don't know"? ... I always wondered who those people were!

Tbh I would'nt have gone out of my way to see it but would have watched it more because it will be a piece of history, but I was travelling (although already seen about 20 re-runs on every channel). It's all harmless enough, some people like that in the way others like pop groups or we like Coventry City, which others would deem 'sad'. Each to their own.

Whoever it was saying small business would suffer, it won't make a difference imo. People will place orders on a different day in the same as they would over Easter or any other period of closure and we have considerably less Bank Holiday's in the UK than anywhere else in Europe.

As for the Royals being a drain on taxpayers they cost us 62p each last year which balanced against the income from tourism and exporting the notion of 'Britishness' around the globe, I reckon is a pretty decent balance in our favour.

Too right Rob, personally if it brings the nation together for one day then i am for it. There was millions in London on the day, street parties all over the country (or countries) so i think alot of people do care!

I'm nonplussed on the Royals but ended up watching a lot of it and enjoyed it. I understand people complaining about whether there should be a monarchy and the financial issue, but anyone criticising those people who do love them and who'd shown up and obviously had a lovely day ought to take a look at themselves. It's not often that something creates a sense of celebration so if it that's costing me the 70p per year or whatever it is to fund, here; have £1.40 and give me two days off.

I think the majority of this thread highlights everything that is wrong with broken-Britain. There is no pride in what we stand for anymore and that is sad. Yesterday was not about two people getting married, it was MUCH more than that. It pains me to say that the americans were celebrating British culture more than you BRITISH. Embarrased.

It's more about your own historical past and the connection to all that went before. It's sad that many Brits want to devalue our past as though what went on was all bad? Without our great explorers and wars against our enemies fought in our Kings and Queen's names we would be a very different people. Today it's about about the continuing existence of the Monarchy that defines us.

If you are not interested then can you say the same for Nelson's column, his flagship in Portsmouth, The kings who fought at the head of the battle to protect our liberty against invading marauders and the list goes on...

If you are totally disinterested then history has taught you nothing and you are ignorant.

Without them we may have all been Catholic and been bowing to the pope and that corrupt papalcy.

It's a huge debate and yes I don't buy into everything about today's royals but if you have lived and worked overseas enough as I have you will come to realise how important they still are today for what they represent to the world.

From where I stand today I'm glad we had strong monarch's like Elizabeth and Henry VIII and many others so we can be who we are here today speaking English and at the forefront of the world having helped shape it. Our royals represent all that to me. Without them our history would be devalued forever.

This is a strong argument, Paxman, and I agree with your historical perspective. I remain a republican because I don't see a role for inherited wealth and privilege in the 21st century. The Queen has been our figurehead for many decades, and has been dignified, diplomatic and compassionate - but for me she's the only one of the current Windsor [or historically Saxe-Coburg] line that deserves the title 'Royal'. The adulterer Charles and his sham marriage to Diana in order to continue the hereditary line signalled the end of my support of the Monarchy.

Public support for Charles has always been understandably lower than for his mother, and perhaps that's why she's never abdicated. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be unhappy with Charles as my King.

More people visit Versailles than Buckingham Palace - if we become a republic then our history will remain - we should be proud of our heritage and our Queen, but once she passes away we should move into the 21st century and abolish the Monarchy.

RoyalScam you are indeed thoughtful and I could debate forever.

I think what a lot of people seem to think is that our Queen (head of state) and whoever follows does not have any 'powers'. In fact they have royal prerogative that still stands to this day.
It's the checks and balances that ensure we do not become a dictatorship and for example the candidate with the most money shall win - as in the United States.
Most people just think they are figure heads without remit other than tourism and foreign business work. Simply not the case.
