Potentially, but during the games in Jan/Dec when fans had no knowledge of definite Premier League interest his ratings were still consistently average. It's an interesting point about biases though as you could flip that on its head and argue that during that period some ratings were potentially given generously due to McCallum's age and inexperience.

Conversely some players will perform adequately and as it’s above expectation they get higher

If the guy who say next to me last night rated he’d have given O Hare a 4 or 5 as he didn’t like him primarily as he’s a Villa player I suspect

Surprised you see it this way G,I felt he was locked down quick etc but his passing was off & positional awareness was worrying at times & I’ve always said I rated him welL above mason,it’s prob 1-2 average games they all have them dips I’m sure he will come back to the level he’s set himself but I do feel Southend we could give mason or Giles a run.

It's risky to overplay young players as they don't have the resilience while their bodies are still developing
And as we have options it makes sense to give the lad the odd break
The only question is who will Robins use to replace him
It's likely to be Giles based on the manager's comments after his surprise signing late on deadline day

He's off the boil but it happens, perhaps unconsciously worried not to press himself too much in case he gets crocked? He's proved to be the better player in that position and as promotion is the goal I expect MR will play him unless he gets a knock. Giles being brought in should ensure he doesn't get complacent.

I think he played well under the circumstances provided by the opposition - it’s like trying to equate a centre forwards performance if he scores a hat trick against a youth team and use that as a measure for how he’d do against a full team in a league game - Portsmouth were a tough team on a great run and had a plan to nullify and at attack in the final third if the game

I've said before I'd like to be £1 behind Mark Robins
The thing to remember though is who the opposing player(s) is when assessing the performance of a young defender
Of course he will find it more difficult against decent, experienced opponents as he was last night
Portsmouth had won 9 on the trot for a reason

I didn't think McCallum was poor with what he did, but it was what he didn't do I thought was noticeable. Didn't get forward nearly as often in the last 2 games as he had been doing previously and it has a massive impact in that formation. I don't think it was the quality of winger he was up against either as he did exactly the same against Bolton.

He was probably trying to be more aware of his defensive role or tired. Be interesting if Giles gets some playtime these next two games
