Coventry Sphinx kept up their run of good performances with a 3-1 Midland Alliance League victory over Alvechurch
With Carl O'Neill back in goal, Sphinx, in their final game of 2013, went looking for their ninth unbeaten game in a row on a sunny afternoon at Sphinx Drive.
Luke Hopkins side did not start well and were a goal down inside four minutes when Jack Cresswell hit a tame twenty- yard shot, which squirmed past O'Neill and into the net.
Sphinx came back with a corner three minutes later that was hacked away. Alvechurch had a corner as did Sphinx in the 15th minute. Then, Ashley Cain hit a post with a shot deflected for a corner and Cutting had a shot pushed away by Brady.
On the half mark, Sphinx won a corner that was cleared. Now trying to take the game to Alvechurch, Sphinx attacked again and the ball fell for Rickie Cutting to score in the 34th minute from inside the area with a low shot past Brady.
Both sides had chances but after Aden Moore had come on, Sphinx started to press winning two corners in the 69th minute.
Alvechurch had a great chance in the 71st minute when Shearer got down the left and sent the ball over for Cresswell to fire over.
But Sphinx were a long way from being done and in the 74th minute, a brilliant ball fell for Rickie Cutting who kept his cool and picked his spot to score with a low finish, delighting the crowd which included a number of Coventry City supporters.
Then in the second minute of stoppage time, Alvechurch won a corner that was cleared upfield. An Alvechurch defender tried to play it back to Brady who completely missed a ball which fell for Aden Moore to stroke in to the empty net and give Sphinx another win in a highly entertaining game.
