McDonald, even given his reputedly shameful tactics in getting a move, is easily the best left back I have witnessed at the club.
Danny Thomas, as a couple of posters have mentioned earlier. You don't expect too much from your defenders, well maybe to have the ability to defend but he brought a bit of creativity to his play. Almost dare I say it, a footballing defender.
Definitely, Bobby Mcdonald . Never seemed to loose the ball and, NOBODY got by him

From my era it would be Paul telfer and Sean Flynn

Good call on Sean Flynn, Pete.

He was a very average player, but always gave 100%, never stopped running and battling and chasing lost causes and made the very best of his limited ability.

He said under not over.

Sent from my phone using my chubby sausage fingers so please excuse any errors.

Don't ever recall Sean Flynn being overrated.

Telfer though was another matter. He semed to get a lot of praise, but he was forever giving the ball away and his passing was woeful.

I agree with Monners about Garry Thompson. I was gutted when he left when we should have got rid of that big headed arse Hateley, who was more bothered with his hair than giving it all like Thompson did.

I always thought Whelan was under rated. he always gave it everything and scored plenty of important goals. A skillful player as well and a genuinely nice bloke. I also thought Aloisi was under rated by some (namely Strachan) and jettisoned too fast after relegation.

Aloisi could have saved us wasting £5,000,001 on Lee Hughes, had it occurred to the manager he had a striker already at the club with a perfectly decent scoring record in that division.

I felt sorry for Aloisi, I think he could have scored a fair few for us in the PL if Strachan had of actually played him regularly rather then the odd sub appearance here and there. He showed his quality when he went to spain

I was never taken in with peoples liking of Telfer and of course the comment that would accompany his name in every sentence - "He covers every blade of grass on the pitch". It wasn't entirely untrue, it's just he seldom did it with the ball at his feet.

I remember Robert Rosario and Lee Hurst shining briefly in a home game against Villa one Christmas- maybe 92/93? which we won 3-0 (including one by "Rosy"). May have been the same Crimbo we hammered Liverpool 5-1 the week before.

Rosario took ages to find his feet, played well for a short time, and was then sold. Lee Hurst looked really good in flashes and then broke his bloody leg, never getting the chance to deliver on all that promise.

The most over-rated player-in Championship Manager 94: http://stevenscaffardi.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/the-top-10-best-championshipfootball.html

I've heard rumours that Ron kept signing him because he played CM :D

As for a few other names on the thread, definitely Aloisi. David Smith was great early on in his career but lost his confidence, not helped by the crowd turning on him. Stuart Robson and Lee Hurst were both superb, the best central midfield partnership in my time supporting the club for one brief, pre-injury season-but I don't think that either were under-rated. Everyone knew that they were class.

If we're talking underrated, how about Dean Emerson, did he ever have a bad game in 130 appearances?

Fantastic player before the injury. My dad reckoned he was a future England player the way he was playing before the knock. But again, I think he was very highly rated at the time. I mean, you could call most of our side in '87 under-rated as far as national reputation goes-Peake, Oggy, Bugsy. I used to hate Lee Dixon as I thought that Bugsy was better than him and should have been in the England side ahead of him!

Wasn't it Gary Megson who injured him in the snow against Sheff Wed - a week before our cup Q final if I remember. But yes, agree - very talented player.

Edit: Really liked Aliosi also - a class finisher. Strachan demonstrated his lack of football knowledge and brainless beligerence in letting him go. He never forgave him for getting injured in the 32-0 win for Aus against American Samoa. Remember him having a good old bleat about it at the time.

I think after Lloyd McGrath, Thommo could be my second favourite ever player. I remember he had a storming mid-week game in a 0-0 at Rotherham. Sent off on his debut too, of course.

When he left didn't he write a really good heart felt open letter to the fans?

Yes, I was there that day. Emerson was never the same player after that.

Yes, I was there too.

Such a good little player and like Torch says, he never came back after his injury with anything like his previous form, so the injury must have surely taken its toll.

Never forgave Megson for that.

Second only to Nicky Summerbee on "my list"!

I remember that day clearly as on the way home my mate slid into a ditch the other side of Cubbington. Crap day all round really.

We did win the game 1-0 though!

Megson did Emerson on purpose as per the Summerbee tackle on Froggy. I think the one that finished Danny Thomas at Spurs was a deliberate one too (QPR player - name escapes me). And of course never forget Ian Shite Shite Shite kneeing Oggy in the face deliberatley - even the gooners thought it was cowardly.

Was just going to say the same thing. It was (or had been) snowing and freezinb, but we won 1-0, so besides the Emerson injury it was a good day for me.

Yeah Paul Telfer always put a shift in and was one of the best athletes we had. (not the best footballer though!)

Viorel Moldovan for scoring against Villa ..... any player who scores against villa should get a mention.

Robert Jarni for his ability to turn a transfer profit after not kicking a ball for us.

Isaias for being able to maintain a figure that Mick Quinn would be proud of.

Cobi Jones for his ability to run a pace and sometimes even with the ball!

think he finished his playing there ,was with them for a fair few years and was a fans player of the season more than once I believe
