According to the CET, The Establishment in Town is gonna be re-furbed and turned into a "Slug & Lettuce" chain pub.
I for one am certainly not happy about this, as I've read it's targeted towards groups of women, so Fruit based drinks galore!
The reason I'm unhappy is it's an alright boozer as it is and especially the Ales it has on tap and in bottles too, so I'm assuming these Ale taps will be gone as I've read the Drinks menu.
One could argue that you've got Golden Cross, Earl of Mercia (wetherspoons) and Drapers (old Browns) all in short distance that serves Ales and on Tap Lager.

I won't mind that as they have decent beer/Ales, well the City Arms and Earl of Mercia do anyhow.

Went to edgebaston couple of years back for a T20, rained off so we went into Brum for drinks! Saw Leon Clarke (he'd just left us that January) in th slug and lettuce with some overly desperate slagging chasing him around everywhere he went. For that reason, I'm out!!

In terms of decent ale pubs around that area, you also have the Phoneix (old Campbell) which usually has 4/5 cask and craft taps on and Whitefriars which has a few cask taps on, both of which are just down the road from Drapers. The Ivy House has bottles and occasionally has a craft on tap and is opposite Drapers too.

While behind the times, bars/pubs in Coventry town centre are beginning to realise ales are a really popular drinks preference these days!

I agree - Drapers is probably the best choice for ales, I didn't bother mentioning it though as it already has been.

Not so keen on the castle in the evenings.

The Twisted Barrel is supposed ok, hopefully as the Cov breweries prosper they look at running their own pub. The Courtyard would be great for it imo

Twisted barrel is great, excellent selection of beers, usually has 8-10 of their own aswell as around 10 guest beers from micro brewerys all over the UK.
Beer gonzo in earlsdon has a good tap house in the back of the shop now has about 15 ales on tap. Old windmill in spon street also has a decent selection of ales, think it's just won pub of the year again for coventry and Warwickshire.

Whitefriars has unfortunately closed down, The Phoneix is ok, the prices are too expensive @£4 a pint (it was when I was there last year) of Ale and slightly out of the way (not worth the journey @£4 p/pint). Never tried the Ivy House yet.
Agreed, It's taken a while to cotton on, but the City Centre is becoming more popularised with Ales and I guess that's my point in the OP, I don't mind change, but reverting to some sort of "Fun Pub" feels like a backwards move for the Town Centre.

In fairness vow, the Slug & Lettuce does do some ales. It used to be in the same group as the Litten Tree, but was seen as a step up from the Litten Tree I think.

Incidentally, the Litten Tree has a good range of hand pulled ales and some decent lagers in bottles (Pilsner Urquelle etc)!

Can't remember the last time I was in the Litten Tree, if ever, thanks for the heads up.
Regarding the Slug & Lettuce doing Ales, I was going by what they had on there online Drinks Menu and could only see Old Speckled Hen in bottles!

You're quite right, FP, after speaking to friends, Ale drinkers who go all around the Midlands drinking, they said that the S&L chain do sell some decent beers after all.
