The rumour I heard today is that he's off to Wigan on Monday morning...quite how he would fit into the scheme of things there, I can't quite imagine, plus I'm very annoyed that we haven't already secured someone like Iain Turner, or the goalie who played against us today, Colin Doyle as a replacement.
Let's face it, it's not exactly surprising that Westy wants out- and it's entirely fair enough. He's put up with crap at Coventry for too long- too often, he's been the passionate talisman covering up the faults of the guys in front of him- he was doing that today, I mean, Birmingham could have had a lot more goals, I guess...at the same time, he has been making mistakes recently in quite a few games (including today's, in my eyes, their second goal), his head has clearly been turned, and it's time for both parties to, well, part.
The entire sorry saga does show us up really bad... Other Championship clubs have been investing. Leicester get a decent defender from Hibernian who scored within 60 seconds of his debut. They also get Patrick van Aanholt, a pretty decent young left back. Burnley today signed the young striker Charlie Austin from Swindon- I've always felt he would have done well for us at Cov...Watford took on a young midfielder from Manchester United. I could go on, and on, and on, and on in this vein regarding our rivals in this division bolstering their ranks...
What happens in City's case?
"Coventry may cash in on Westwood" "Blades move in for Coventry's Doyle."
No actual talk of investment, or players coming in to help us out at a time when we bloody well need it, to either improve the first XI or give our current players the kick-up-the-arse they so desperately need. The only incoming transfer was Joe Elliott changing jobs for goodness sake!
Based on today's game, we looked like we'd lost confidence even when in the lead. Instead of scenting blood, we sat back and let them dominate the game, and ultimately got punished for it- our heads slumped, and we resorted to long-ball for the last 20 minutes, which was incredibly frustrating to watch, I'm sure for all who were there...
Selling Doyle at a time when we've got Carsley enjoying a stay in hospital recovering from back surgery, Deegan still MIA and apparently now Clingan out for the season (a second rumour I heard today), I mean...talk about the top end of stupid! As good as Conor Thomas appears to be (he played better than Gunnar today for me), it's not fair to him to throw into the deep end so fast, really. Also, we had no recognised central midfielders on the bench today, which explains the bizarre Cameron-Thomas swap. I really wish this could be rectified, but can’t see it happening anytime soon…
Sorry about the rant, but it’s just so frustrating, especially because of the situation we’re in in the Championship right now (from 4th to 14th in seven weeks isn’t particularly great, right?) and the fact that there’s nothing being put into Coventry City, whilst other clubs are recruiting like crazy. Ultimately, it won’t help us whatsoever.
