Starting a new club - a way to gague support (2 Viewers)

What about those of us who aren't Coventrians? Would you still support a new club? I have links with Coventry and they were the nearest 'big' club when I was younger that's why I support CCFC.

So I'm not sure if I could support a phoenix club, I'd wish them well of course, like I do all our local teams. However, for me it's the badge, it's Coventry City FC (but they HAVE to be playing in Coventry. Period.) that is my team.

Norman Wisdom said this....."If CCFC do vanish, that's the time."

At what point do we say, Northampton Cobblers are dead? August 11th? Next January, end of this coming season? By then it'll be too late for 2014/15.

Sky Blue Homer said...."What happens when original ccfc returns to Cov & if they come back with new owners?"

SBH...by that time, if it ever happens, the new CCFC (playing in Coventry in front of passionate fans) will have got promotions and the Northampton lot, (playing in front of 500 selfish idiots), will have been relegated and will be in dire straits - if not ceased to exist. We'll overtake them on the way up. We'll take back our rightful history. It's ours. Not some faceless hedge fund.
& I believe because we'll have thousands willing to support such a reborn club, the FA will fast track us. We'll be in the Conference North maybe.

Like everyone I hope we are playing at the Ricoh this season, though I hate the thought of Sisu still owning us. But at least the fans will have won round one. We can work on getting rid of them afterwards. I still cling to that.
But we've got to have an alternative strategy. & I believe more and more people are coming around to the idea of a reborn City. It's a Plan B.
If we can play this reborn club at the Ricoh, how good would that be.

Jack, this has got to be a contingency plan. Bottom of our hearts we want CCFC playing at the Ricoh and finally Sisu to go.
But if that doesn't happen a new Coventry City FC playing at the Ricoh has to be a plan. US, the fans, will know we are the true CCFC, whatever name we may choose.
Ideal scenario is, we get placed in Conference North/South or at worst, the league below. No debt, owned by us, at a superb ground. NO SISU. What heaven. With crowds between 6,000-10,000 we'll be well placed to get promotions and be back up where we are in 3 seasons. Viable, with fans who get to enjoy their team again. People will soon jump on the train.
And, it sends out the message to Sisu, WE are CCFC, not you and the 500 who go to Sixfields will soon realise what they've done. A team playing here would kill off this Northampton debacle. We could reclaim our history, just as Wimbledon did.
I stress, this is a contingency plan. But we must have it. Not ideal, I realise. But fans acting together will force the issue. I don't think us fans realise how much power we have working together.

Great post with you all the way and can think of another dozen that agree

Spionkop - agree with most of what you are saying but don't bank on being fast tracked. The very best we could hope for is Midland Alliance but would not be at all surprised if we did have to start in Mid Comb 2. In fact that is most likely scenario even if there were a few thousand fans (and support would be very split).

Brighton, Charlton etc. came back.

Clubs disappearing from the area completely is far less common than them coming back.

If our club doesn't come back, it will die, so there won't need to be a decision made as the club won't exist full-stop. One thing we don't have to worry about is a permanent move away, just whether the thing exists or not!

So Norman, you'd happily wait a decade as Brighton and Charlton did, before making a decision?
Or am I misinterpreting your post, it's a bit vague.

Who said anything about happily waiting?

In this country, clubs come back or die, it's an inarguable fact. That's not vague in the slightest, and Brighton was somewhat less than a decade too!

You want the best chance of a replacement club succeeding? Much like a protest, you make sure the conditions are right for as many as possible to get behind it.

And that time is when the current club dies.

Mark82, think Midland Alliance is a bit pessimistic. Chester are a good example. Far smaller club of course. They got fast tracked. Only demoted three divisions. & now back in Conference.
If we can show we've got a big fanbase. Say 5,000 season tickets, it'll quickly become clear we can't be placed in a league that wouldn't be able to cope with that level of support. Say 1,000 away fans, for example.
Don't get me wrong, this is just an alternative strategy, if it becomes clear we're stuck with Northampton. Nothing I want more than playing at the Ricoh. My season ticket bit of plastic is waiting to be swiped!

Norman, Brighton left the Goldstone in 1997, they opened at the Amex in 2011. To me that's a decade. In any language it's a long time. I don't think CCFC fans will be as patient as you.
And Charlton was 1984 until 1992. To me that's as near as damnit to a decade.
I was there to watch Brighton play Palace in the play off Second leg in May. Although they lost it was wonderful to experience the buoyant atmosphere on that night. Something we won't get playing in Northampton.
To be honest I'm puzzled by your thinking.

But Chester were liquidated so their new club replaced their old club. With ccfc in existence 'Phoenix' are just a new club.

They played in brighton before the Amex opened.

And as for my thinking, it's based on historical precedent.

Open a new club while the old club exists, and it stops a new club having the best chance of success. The only one that has vaguely worked in that respect is Enfield.

We've only been in admin 4 and a bit months, Portsmouth were in admin for 14 months. We have yet to actually play in Northampton so things could still change. The march was only a week ago and yet you and Gary J seem to want to throw in the towel.

You say ccfc was never ours? Didn't feel that way when we won the fa cup and the streets were lined with people cheering as the came back as heroes. Or what about the number of last day relegation escapes, like Tottenham away?

I will not renew my season ticket, I will also not go to away games whilst we are in Northampton, and I certainly won't support a breakaway club whilst ccfc is still in existence.

Ah, let's have a chat about the Wanderers while we're here, because obviously over a century ago is very relevant to present day conditions.

Norman, for all intents and purposes, once City kick off in Northampton, the club will cease to exist. Have you not been the countless posts on the subject. And that's besides the silent majority who don't come on this site, they'll vote with their feet. CCFC will cease to exist. It'll happen almost overnight.
Waiting and waiting - as you advocate - will be a slow death.
Yes, Brighton played at the Withdean - a run down athletic stadium. With crowds of 5,000. They play now at a proper football stadium in front of 25,000 + - what does that tell you?
I'm afraid I can't wait while my club dies in front of me. I live in Coventry. I'm passionate about my team. You seem half hearted, ready to toe the line. Wait, wait, wait, wait....for what. Us fans ARE the club. Ultimately we'll decide.

it tells me that all this nonsense about a lost generation is just that, nonsense, and a club moving back would harness support and enthusiasm beyond that which a rival club could muster, thus making the need to set up a rival club irrelevant unless the present one dies.

You're not listening Norman. It will. Football is all about emotions. I see where exactly where you stand now.
Do you live in the north? If so you are so totally out of touch with local feeling.

I stand in wanting the best chance for my club, that involves me not being selfish and doing what I want, but making sure the conditions are there for most to join the journey, making success more likely.

And success is more likely for a replacement club if the current one ceases to exist.

Ah, I see now. I must be slow, but then I'm prepared to listen to anyone. But you happily go along with this evil Sisu idea.
OK. We're done. I see you for what you are.

Seriously? Likes on a facebook page is your market research? There is a distinct lack of effort required when liking a page on facebook. Think of all the events you said you'd go to on facebook and then how many you actually attended. From somebody who uses facebook pages on a regular basis, likes only tell a fraction of the story.

I also think that a new club, at this stage, would only add further trauma to the situation and fragment our already fractured fan base even further. Yes, it's a great plan b - but should only be a plan b for now. Further, jumping to a pheonix club now would only damage the prospects of a real pheonix should the club die or become an equivolent of MK Dons. We're far too early on this and it could be just another in a long line of bad decisions putting nails in the coffin of our beloved club.

Who said happily going along with it?!?

Jesus, some people are determined to just decide a load of bollocks here aren't they? They have a different approach to you, they must be a SISU stooge, obviously!

frankly, that kind of attitude stinks and suggests the people who deserve failure are those who are closed to their thinking and will plough ahead regardless, even in the face of evidence of how better to proceed! The only reason I'm saying it is I want my Coventry club to have the best chance of success!

What's the point of even debating the subject if you decide anybody who wants a different approach is a SISU stooge.

Pathetic!

Option 1 = SISU stop fucking about with OUR club and at least return to the Ricoh and in an ideal world disappear back where they crawled from.

Option 2 = Plans will already be in place to bring Coventry United into the Ricoh and cut SISU United loose without a fan base.

Why Coventry Utd?!? They're no replacement club in any sense of the word!

I get the feeling that it is YOU who want's to decide. You've not taken anything on board others have said and resorted to mellowdrama and assumptions about individuals as an argument.

you may well be right but good percentage of our support is from surrounding areas & could they support a new ccfc. If original ccfc moved back with new owners thats my club along with plenty if others, not 1 built on knee-jerk reactions, anger & hatred. Why would someone from say nuneaton or leamington support a new club when there home town club are doing fine. Dont think i could support new ccfc & my team Bedworth

I'm even more cynical about Coventry United than I am about Coventry City at present. It seems a it is a few business men who wanted to start a local team and are jumping on the CCFC circus bandwagon in order to gain a little more local support.

The day I support a team playing in red called United is the day I lose all sense of identity.

This situation is unique and can't be compared to Brighton, Rangers or, at least yet, Wimbledon. For each of those clubs the situation was very clear cut which made it easy for fans to form a united front. Here we have a hideously complex stand off between SISU and the company they're trying to bust and so nobody knows what the long term really holds for the Cobblers.

As a result you have some fans writing the club off entirely, some who bizarrely are buying season tickets and others like myself who will just refuse to go but only until the club returns. You will only get full support for a new club until the current one goes totally out of existence or permanently stays in Northampton. Starting a protest club is folly.

Wimbledon knew from the off they were never coming back.

It would not be up to the Football League. As once they had dropped you below League 2 the decision belongs to the Conference who have different FFP rules again and will decide themselves where we sit.

Big problem though is that their rules are based on seeing your accounts to see if you are financially stable, so SISU FC would struggle as they don't do accounts, but a phoenix club would pass this and I would expect a Blue Square North start up if not Conference Prem.

Quite.

Forget what I think, you think, Brian Blessed thinks. It's about the simple desire to have as many fans behind a club as possible, to maximise its chances of success.

That's not buying into a 'SISU plan'. On the contrary, it's trying to make sure that Coventry football isn't stymied by acting in haste and repenting at leisure.

There is no point forming a new team unless there is no CCFC.

What happens when this new stadium is built? Will you watch the team then?
