That best 11 thread reminded me of this article I came across recently.

Have to admit, I'd not actually heard of the guy until I read it as he was before my time but it's interesting nonetheless.

Yep! He went to New York Cosmos on loan in '82 then joined West Brom.

Most interesting game - he handed in a transfer request - The response was given to him by Jimmy hill over the tannoy, as the team were warming up for a game v Notts county at home - we lost the game 5-1 . He was a star though and particularly after Tommy hutch left, he handed over the batton to hunt, who was our star player until Bobby gould came in, and that team fell apart as they did not want to play for Bobby

STEVE HUNT - born 4th August 1956.

Signed from NY Cosmos and played for CCFC from 1978-1984 scoring 27 goals in 185 games

Position: Left Winger

On his day (in fact most days) SH was as an exciting player you could ever wish to see. Operating wide left his pace and final delivery from deep in the opposing half were sometimes unbelievable. This plus scoring some brilliant goals made him the complete player.

He left City to go back to NY Cosmos on loan and then returned to the UK playing for WBA scoring 15 goals in 68 games

He played for England twice in 1984

A truly great player and one of the best to wear a City shirt

So having read all these rave reviews of the man why had I never heard of him until recently? Has he ever made an appearance at one of the legends days?

I'm getting the impression he was overshadowed in the club's history by the greatness of Tommy Hutch.

I guess hutchy lives longer in the memory as he was here so much longer ,would be great to have stevie back for alegends day

He was excellent for sure. The kind of player who totally ran the show and commanded the midfield. Stacks of MOTM performances from him.

he was excellent - but we will never have a player like hutch again - he was our best player for 7 years, and if we had a player like that today, he would be snapped up by the top 4. Basically he would collect the ball from the keeper, and then the left wing was his.

In the 80s Villa were are big rivals and he had a history with them, and I think supported them. US football was seen as a joke even though they had 'stars' in their league, those stars were about 50 years old. Anyone who had played in the US was treated as a freak, as it is today with Beckham, but Hunt was massive in the US. It took him time to adjust to us but for me he was joining our best ever team of youngsters. He had flair and full of tricks, and lived in Wolston for a time. Met him a few times and he was a normal guy who would always talk to you and not give you the 'I'm greater than you attitude'. It's funny you mention him because he is the kind of player we could do with now, at the tio of the diamond formation.

I was in the Cov Telegraph when I was a kid with a banner saying "Don't go Steve Hunt" as he was about to leave us. It was Man City away and I think we won 3-1 and I'm sure he scored.

To be honest Wingy I can't remember who scored but I think it was a cup gam and it was definitely on the tele because it was in the days when we had the Big T on our kit and we had to wear a different kit when it was televised. Also remember making a few quid that day as we were being bombarded with 10p and 5p coins for about the last 15 minutes. Happy days

Thats the game i'msure ,Ian butterworth another talented young city centre-half broke out of defense a couple minutes before time ,found bodak on the wing ,who ran on and beutifully lobbed Corrigan if i remember rightly,got into afight after that one as well ,it was like me and my brother were jinxed if we went together

Great goal that, and goal of the month.

Hunt did play for a while under Bobby Gould, but left shorttly after for the Baggies where he went on to win two England caps.

He was a great player, and a very creative midfielder, and has always been underated by our fans.

Think he went on to play for the other SKY BLUES,think there were a few differences with the management over discipline
