....surely, as he was employed a year ago by his pal Tim Fisher to oversee transfers he will now be relieved of his position. With sisu on skid row and looking to save every penny possible and with another tranfer embargo looming what will he be doing to justify his salary ?

Ive always liked Steve, hes one person who within the club just speaks his mind. Hes a down to earth bloke aswell unlike Fisher. He's got alot of time for the fans.

Im sure you could go through the whole club and find people who have jobs that are made up. Steve's one person who i think at the club is actually worth his wages. Look at the players he's managed to bring in and finalise deals ect

In fairness it's more a question than a statement, this thread IMO.
Valid point about his role but the embargo could be lifted as easily as it is applied if the circumstances change. So if the guy is considered to do a good job in the transfer market - they'd keep him...he can just carry on regardless, sifting & negotiating...just constrained by time. Some he'll lose as a result.

With respect that is bollox. For what reason are you jumping to the defence of this bloke ? It's a job for a mate nothing more nothing less. What is he doing that a manager couldn't do and haven't done for years at clubs throughout football. His salary would be far better served given to a player.

I think they said he was more like a director of football, overseeing the operation at Ryton. So I imagine he has his fingers in more pies than just transfers - contracts and administration, scouting, youth teams, the academy etc.

Because hes managed to land some pretty decent players for us, David McGoldrick most recently. He's also managed to get the most for players out-bound. Again, most recently, Richard Keogh. Hes managed to hand pick Mark Robins. He helped turn Charltons misfortune into promotion. He knows this level of football. Id bet aswell hes only on 6 figures in terms of salary before tax aswell.

Steve, sorry Cody getting mixed up sorry. His 5 figure salary could in fact should go towards a player who might just might give us the oomph to get out of this shite league we are in. What is he there for that the c.e.o. couldn't do, surely it's the manager who selects his wish for players or are you intimating something that has been alledged before that it's Waggott who is selecting the players. Makes you wonder if it is that that may have tipped Robins over the edge.

In the current era...people in this kind of role, if used properly, I imagine will listen to the likes of Carsley about areas needing to be strengthened. He'll diss out what he can get within budget...agree a specific target or two - & then go get them...or not, as the case might be. That allows the like of Carsley to focus on the coaching side rather than talking to agents & other managers to "negotiate". All that is done for him - he either gets his no1 target or he doesn't.

This threads a joke. If you looked at the management structure of the club you'd see his role is important for both the football and business sides.

Oh, and suggesting its a reason Robins left sounds like utter bollocks.

He will only go when Fisher goes as Fisher knows nothing about football - personally I'd get rid of Fisher and put Waggot in overall charge - he's been CEO before - think he will be more of a realist than Fisher and do a far better job - we need honesty at the top, someone that will get the job done - Fisher's credibility is shot

Nope. Not even close. His record at Charlton before joining us was terrible. Grenduffy tried the same daft assertion. It's wrong

For reference, from 20th September last year:

Let me help you out with regards Waggott. Grenduffy can respond to this where I've posted it before, but this being a very brief précis. He was CEO of Charlton, in his first full season, 08-09 I recall they were relegated. Ahead of that season, there was talk about not signing as many players as their peers (sound familiar?). In his next season, they got to the play-offs but didn't go back up, this being in League One. As such he was relieved of his duties as part of a 'cost-cutting' measure. They kept him on to help in the transfer market and use his contacts. Again, sound familiar? With his ' signings' they slipped down to 13th and they dispensed with his unique skills.

In comes his old mate Fisher. He's here to 'help' Thorn in the crucial January window and loan opportunity on a 'consultancy part time basis'. We sell our leading scorer and bring in two youth players whilst our relegation contemporaries bring in 3, 4 or 5 times that number. They pull away and we go down. Incidentally, crossing his old club Charlton as now without Waggott they go back up.

He's awarded the Director of Football role?!? He can't sign the players he's asked to by Thorn 'cause his old mate Fisher can't persuade their employer to commit to fund us now we're down and we're in embargo. When we're out of embargo, he signs plenty of players and states that Thorn will be given a 'their support' ( and I quote there verbatim) as he was unduly effected by off-the-field influences last season.

Arsen Wenger is a fantastic world class manager and a bit shit at the transfer game so why do people think someone managing at this level would be any better, all we have done is took the role of the traditional chairman and rather than it be some brandy swilling, cigar smoking fat cat have given the work to someone who knows football and has proven his worth.....I would have said this was a troll post if the originator did not have 300 posts to their name. I know people are pissed off about the embargo but lets not throw baby out with the bath water :facepalm:

So what is this vast knowledge of football Mr Waggott has over lets say Carsley himself or Oggy or Rioch, thats without any new manager we may get. Where did he learn his expertise ? Why does this cash strapped club employ a man to help get players in the door when for months at a time we are banned from doing so, makes no commercial sense at all. Someone said he is here to assist Tim Fisher who knows nothing about football em pardon ! Signing a player is just the same as giving someone a job, a manager recommends the player the club secretery, chairman, c.e.o. does the rest. What is the role of the assistant chairman John Clarke for instance, he knows how to employ people doesn't he ?.

What pisses me off is financially this club is going down the toilet, may be wound up soon according to Fisher this morning, yet we employ someone to do a job, yet for months in the year there's no job to do, yet we are unable to bring in an extra player to boost our cause. Don't know what salary he enjoys but i suspect it is a little more than minimum wage plus exes. Yet fans seem to except this as being good for the club !!
