I think we need two players, one in defence, one in midfield, it’s pretty obvious
Agreed and they need to be players that are marquee signings. Definitely at CM and I’m in two minds whether or not the CBs we’ve got are good enough to be a Top 4 defence this season.

Case in point being Binks. In time, he will develop into a solid CB but why is this signing seen to be transformative this window when he was firmly 3rd choice behind Kitching all season in 2023/24. From @Saddlebrains intel, the plan was to always try to make his move permanent had we extended his loan past Jan. Both things happened.

In any case, there haven’t been any new signings there so I’m sceptical as to how things will just change.

A quick look at the team v Stoke and there’s only 2 new signings in the starting 11 and it was full strength barring Sheaf, Kitching and Rapha.

I can't see why a Prem team wouldn't take a punt on Hamer. He was pretty much the only bright spark for Sheffield United last season.

Any idea what is putting teams off? His buyout is ~20m isn't it. Se ms a bargain for any lower half Prem team to me

I would say probably that he wasn’t ’standout’ in, let’s face it, a pretty shite premier league team? He had a decent couple of games at the start but then although one of their better players, wasn’t anything that special and also still prone to the odd mistake which is made more obvious at that level - I’m not sure I could see him in many top half teams…?

He was by far their best player and ranked quite well among PL midfielders in some stats which was pretty good going in such an awful team.

Definitely good enough for a bottom half PL side.

yeah sorry, maybe didn’t word that quite right - he was one of their best players by far, but he wasn’t standout compared to other players in his position across the league

and maybe Wolves, maybe Forest, not sure there are many others in the bottom half I could see taking him

I agree we can play better than that and frankly we have to. We beat loads of teams better than Stoke last year.
Pre-season performances time and time again prove to be a meaningless indication of the real thing. Stoke were rubbish in pre-season and played us off the park in the first half. There is a world of difference between being allowed to play expansive football and encountering most Championship teams that niggle, shirt pull, get tight on attackers and commit professional fouls.
The year we were promoted to the top division under Jimmy Hill, we had a terrible pre-season and likewise the year we won the FA Cup.
The early games are for fitness and trying out formations. The league matches are the real deal and you have to fight for the right to play or teams will steam roller you.

I agree with your observations about pre season results and have put those type of examples forward myself . I never take any real stock about the results. But also I'm not going to bet wet over a defeat away first game of the season.

For me we are a top 10 side with a very good chance of making the play offs. But plenty of others have a similar CV.

Most of those teams ( with the exception of the relegated PL sides ) have not spent 35 million -£40 in the last 2 seasons . Carrick at Boro has has done a good job on a limited budget.

Yes but when were they last in League Two with not a transfer fee pot to piss in. We were reduced to dead weeds under SISU and punched above our weight to get back to the Championship

There are teams in League One who have been in the Prem more recently than us and had the benefits of parachute payments Bolton and Reading to name two. Have the Championship teams too. We are playing catch up. Ipswich spent loads over seasons in League One before they got it right

Maybe teams are waiting to see if the Shed Utd take over actually happens. If it doesn't they know the can get him for under the sell on clause a day or two from the end of the window.

We have to admit that unless Doug has a few quid stashed away, the squad ill be as it is now. Even if Vik gets sold, the transfer window ends in 2 weeks and that's not likely enough time to do any more decent business

If so then that’s horrific for planning. As a basic we haven’t replaced Kelly - I’ll be really dissatisfied if we don’t bring in another couple before window ends regardless. The squad has glaring in balance in key position - robins must see that.

Kelly was a peripheral player who had no business being anywhere near the squad last season - what do you mean replaced him?

Your right. I'm sure no decent business will be done in the next two weeks in the entirety of football.

Not panicking just yet but if we don't bring in at least a CM I'd be furious

3 windows in and Hamer still not replaced. Yes we don't need a new Hamer or the exact type of player, but point stands we haven't

Ayari, the initial replacement got sent back as he was shit

Torp, we all have High hopes but he's not hit the levels required as of yet

Add on Kelly has gone. Peripheral player yes, but still, a player

Our midfield is crying out for a solid number 6

Ideally want a dominating CB like Joe Worrall aswell

He's not that far wide of the mark in all fairness.

A lot of chips do need to fall into place before we can even think about starting formal negotiations with our targets. And if Gyokeres is sold I doubt it will be this week. Him moving on clearly hinges on Arsenal getting what they want for Nketiah, which is becoming a ridiculously drawn out process in itself. Marseille are now out the race so hopefully Bournemouth are desperate enough in their need to replace Solanke.

But it's no secret though that the later on in the window it gets, the chances of us securing signatures becomes significantly harder, mainly because the time window for the selling club to replace their outgoing player is severely decreased. No doubt we'd have to massively overpay to even spark their interest as well.

We could always change shape to a 4-4-2 since we’d have sheaf/ Eccles as enforcers and Torp/Rudoni as a more creative 8s?

God I hope robins reads this forum 🤣

Most business is done near the end of the window......Premier League squads submitted, urgency, clubs needing to cover costs.

Can we please stop with the inane Hamer ramblings . Does anyone on here seriously think that we haven't tried to recruit a similar player, honestly?

Hamer was a fantastic talent one who got better and better the longer he was here but also a player who changed his style of play too. He started as a deep lying playmaker but ended up being a box to box dynamic midfielder.

Finding another player to emulate Hamer is going to prove incredibly difficult if not impossible

Let's move on
