Key thing in all this is the 'still despised to this very day.'
This was 1977. 1977!!! Next year it will have been 40 years.
Just how sad and pathetic is that. A grudge for that many years.

Yes, 40 years, during which time they have been relegated on several other occasions. Do they have someone to blame for each individual relegation, I wonder?
They are really sad individuals, many of whom will not have been born in 1977. Very few will actually know (or believe) the facts of what happened on that fateful night when they had their destiny in their own hands - and lost!
Best of all, and as demonstrated in the TV programme, is that JH would not have been bothered one jot by their grudge. He revelled in such stuff!

At the end of the day, if they'd have got the result they needed on that particular day in 1977 and 1997, they'd have stayed up. They didn't, they lost.

Its an absolute myth that has carried beyond all reasoning that Jimmy Hill decided to delay kick off that today. It's simply untrue, the decision was made by the police that day due to the unexpected amount of Bristol City fans that made the journey to the game. JH would never have the authority to do that.
Plus, all Sunderland had to do was bloody win and they couldn't manage that, bunch of idiots.

Well yes, the myth grew into a supposed reality. Bristol fans were late that day. Jimmy Hill of course wanted the game delayed as a result, but it would have been the police who made the decision.
But hey, let's have a pantomime villain eh! Gives us someone to hate.
The playing the game out to a stalemate is a different matter, but have seen that happen a number of times. I remember Austria and Germany playing out a tame 0-0 draw with no effort to score from either side to enable them to get through to the next round of the World Cup I think it was (or it could have been the Euro's).

It would have been nice if both Sunderland and Newcastle had gone down. Then they could have had their little local derby in the Championship where it belongs, as nobody else is interested in it.
Had Sunderland, Newcastle and Aston Villa all been relegated, it would have been a clean sweep for clubs who have ridiculous fans who believe their clubs are huge footballing institutions that should be winning titles and trophies every year. They are deluding themselves, they all had their greatest days a century or so ago. At least a large proportion of City fans remember us winning something!

I've said this before, but Newcastle are the 3rd highest supported team in the Prem IIRC.
Shouldn't be anywhere near relegation.
Edit: the Etihad has just overtaken it. so 4th.
